I just moved up to 5.8.17 and it is NOT honoring ANY of the prefereces I've got set to not do work when the user is active [all preferences set NOT to do work when computer is in use, and to waite till the user is inactive for at least 1 minute beforer starting work.
Anyone else having this trouble; or know how to fix it.

Mac boinc 5.8.17 not honoring preferences

Did you do a manual project update from BOINC for the project where you changed the preferences? BOINC has to read them in from the project before they get applied, and that only happens when it contacts the project scheduler.

Please check my post here to

Please check my post here to double check that you followed everything correctly. You only need to update on Einstein after you saved the changes there.

Jord;
With the exception of trying the Simple View's 'Customize Preferences for this computer' first, I did almost exactly what you posted in the other thread.

Hmmmm, Do you still have

Hmmmm,

Do you still have the 'I want to customize my prefs...' checked in the Simple GUI preferences dialog?

IIRC, if that's checked BOINC will override anything that comes down from the projects and use what you set there locally instead.

Yes I did; unfortunitly that still didn't work. I finally d/led the development version [5.9.9], the project pref's still don't appear to work, but at least the local override prefs seem to know work.

still looking for a 5.8.17 reason / fix.

Almost exactly? ;-) Ok,

Ok, then just try this.

Make sure you unchecked the option in Boinc Simple GUI to use the override preferences and saved that changes.

Then go back to your preferences page on the site, edit it and immediately update it without editing anything.
Then update through BOINC manager.

(I tried saying something similar through the BOINC forums, but it told me I was spamming ... blocked by the anti spam software. ;-))

Ok Russell, it looks like you

Ok Russell, it looks like you have covered your bases here, so I just did some testing on one of my Winboxes running 5.8.15 and you're right, it's broken.

I could not get it to respond to the preference to idle when user active at all using the web interface from the project. The client toggles the right element in the glob_prefs file correctly when you change the pref, but does not obey it. Restarting BOINC, rebooting the machine, and/or forcing a reread of the config file from the Advanced view did not help.

In addition, it would not acknowledge the local preference override until I went and manually edited the element from 1 to 0 in the glob_pref_override file. Only then would it acknowledge and obey the preference.

This is something which happened recently, since I know for a fact it worked correctly in 5.4 (I just checked my logbook and I tested for it then). I'm not sure about 5.8 though, I don't have an entry indicating I tested it for this before or if I had it worked so I didn't make a note of it.

your right. I went and manually edited the file "/Library/Application Support/Boinc Data/global_prefs.xml" editing the line "" to "0" and it started acting as it should.

Ah, thanks for that update. I thought I had tried that in the global_prefs file to get it to work from the web interface. Perhaps I made the same mistake twice, so I'll give it another shot on the Winbox. ;-)

Alinator

Well your lucky on the Mac, at least you can make the default method work. It's totally broken on Windows. ;-)

The only way I can get it to work is to manually tweak the local override file.

One more thing, make sure you go back and set the pref on the web site correctly. If you've tweaked the the glob_pref file manually, the next time you contact the project it will reset it to whatever the web prefs are at that time, IIRC.
