Well I just randomly chose Hammersmith & Fulham route 148 ( which could be anywhere from Dublin to Moscow for all I know, much less south of London ) with the worst waiting time of 1.5 minutes over twelve months. Hmmmm ... I wonder, did this bus pick up passengers at all ? :-))))
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Central London is mainly OK, try the 131 route in Merton (Wimbledon) out in the suburbs. Bus Managers sit behind a desk all day and say hey look, we achieved 99% of bus miles today! We fulfilled our contract. The reality is extended delays between services, and two turning up at once, leapfrogging down the route to the terminus bus station. And all doing 45mph+ in a 30mph limit at 11pm at night trying to make up the bus miles lost during the day!
All looks good on paper, but it's crap out there on the street! But the stats work ....
Oh and by the way, the Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham is an Inner London Borough of Greater London in West central London, and a place where you drive through to get to somewhere else. Hammersmith is famous for its ubiquitous flyover, and Fulham or "Fulla's Hamlet" was originally "land in the crook of a river bend belonging to an Anglo Saxon chief named Fulla". It also has a semi famous football team, so I'm told.
Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Seems like maybe one or two here and there, but not many or it would have taken longer to get people on and off. Either that or the drivers go really fast between stops!!

Wot???? No way. What you get is drivers turning up at a bus stop, with nobody wanting to get on or off. They open the doors, wait 2 minutes then close them and drive off. They say it's all about "regulating the service" for timekeeping. Actually there are counters on the buses, each driver is monitored on how often they open and close the doors. That way they can't whizz down the route missing out stops and get away with it.
Transport for London (TFL) is a total joke in the suburbs in terms of bus services. But to be fair they pay for road repairs for London Boroughs, so it doesn't come out of local Council funds, which would put up Council Taxes.
Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Chris,
Where there's a will there's a way ....
Can't they just cruise down the highway at 80 MPH
occasionally opening and closing the doors ?
Tell any passengers on board they look like they
needed some 'Fresh Air'

Wouldn't actually surprise me if some of them did!!

Actually I think it was probably better known for the Hammersmith Palais, where also the Beatles played in the 60's as did other famous acts. If you were a bit more upmarket it was the Lyceum in the Strand, and if you were that desperate, the Orchid Purley. Went to all of them in my teenage and early 20's years.
The current bridge is indeed Grade II listed but with a chequered history as well as its forerunner.
Going back to Fulham for a moment, apart from the footy club, it also had the old Power station, and just down the road the Lots Road London Underground power station, although Technically in Chelsea.
So I think my comments of passing on through, or just for a night out is fair. Nobody wanted to live there. The posh people did, and still do, live down the road in Barnes.
Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Chicago Transit Authority has always been notorious for buses being bunched up, but now they have real-time GPS tracking available to both managers and the public. You can check your smart phone and see where the next bus (or train) is and when it will arrive at your stop. http://www.transitchicago.com/tracker/?source_quicklinks=1 And since the managers are watching, they keep themselves better spaced.

The tachograph would bust them for speeding.
Today the computer on the bus likely sends back GPS / speed / door open / a bunch of diagnostics on the bus / the amount of cash in the box / ........ every 60 seconds or so.
