I just purchased a new computer and installed boinc on it. Sure enough, the fan is three times louder than my older machine since I installed boinc. I tried setting my preferences to 1 processor at a time, and that worked for about a minute (you could actually hear the new preferences kick in). But then, just my luck, the fan started running up to where it was loud again even without the hyperthreading. Is this fixable?

The Einstein application

The Einstein application under BOINC uses all available free CPU cycles. If that means it is using them 100% and your CPU is heating up, it means your fan will kick in to cool the CPU down.

But then again, anything else that will use your CPU to 100% will kick in the fan. Do you want to have game makers, 3D application makers etc. to give you fixes as well?

Or don't you think it's better to check in your BIOS if you can either increase the maximum temperature before the fan kicks in, or else for you to buy a more silent fan, or a better fan that cools better at lower revolutions without the added noise?

No. I tried uninstalling

No. I tried uninstalling boinc, and a few other things. Bottom line: only when boinc is running is the fan much louder for some unknown reason.

I suspect this will end up being a problem to live with, or check out a new fan.

Gerry, unfortunately the only solution is probably to buy a quieter fan for the computer (or complain to the manufacturer about how noisy it is). Larger fans tend to move more air per revolution and thus can run more slowly. This makes them quieter. So it may be possible to replace the noisy (and presumably small) fan on your new computer with a larger and quieter one.
