My PC crashed the other day and I ended up re-installing Windows. I am now up and running again but when I logged on to Einstein there are 9 work units that were lost when the computer went down. They are still shown on my account but i cannot action them,
Do I have to wait until they reach their report deadline or is there in any way they can be returned??

If you merge your new host with the old version the server may resend the previously assigned tasks. If not they will be reissued to other hosts if needed when they time out.

Except in this case, he won't be able to merge right now because of the 'In Progress' results on the old ID, and I'm guessing he reformatted the drive before reinstalling Windows which is why the work went poof in the first place.
Also, by definition the work will have to be reissued when it times out since the IR and quorum is 2 in EAH now.

You can't delete a host as long as it has results in progress on it.
You can merge a host that has results in progress.

OK, well then that's an improvement. I haven't done a merge since I first started in on BOINC, but IIRC back then I had to let everything go away on the old ID's before I could do anything with them.
So if that's the case, I guess Bob should merge them right away to get the poofed work resent to the new ID and make sure the host has enough time to get it all done.

Problem is they will not merge. He was using 5.4.9 which did not have the CPU extensions shown. Now he's using 5.8.15 which is, so they look like different machines and will not merge.
RE: ... Now he's using

I don't think this is a problem at all. Last September, I had a machine whose HDD crashed. It was running 5.4.9 on WinXP SP1. Just this weekend, I've installed a new HDD and installed WinXP SP2 and BOINC 5.8.15. I was able to merge the new HostID with its old incarnation without any problems.
If the OP selects his old host and clicks on the "merge" link, it should find the new HostID and offer the merge, even though the version of BOINC is quite different. I suspect the merge will be successful and the "lost" work will be resent to his "new" host. The only possible problem might be more work than he really wants but if he does the merge now there would not be a risk of exceeding the deadline - so no real problem.

Gary.

Success!!!! Many thanks to all contributors. I successfully merged my accounts.
Thanks again

I presume you mean merged your computers :).
I also see that you have both blocks of results now safely residing on your new hostID so the lost has been found :). Your quorum partners will appreciate that!! Not all projects implement this useful BOINC feature. I've made use of it a few times previously when various hardware or software glitches have trashed the work queues of various machines.
EDIT: Please realise that you can't retrieve any results that have terminated with a "computation" or other error which has been reported to the server. However anything that hasn't been reported to the server can be recovered.
Cheers,
Gary.
