Quite a fun article for quite a fun recent early discovery from the LHC:

'Beauty with antimatter bottom' created out of pure energy

Decayed nega-derrière explodes shortly afterwards

Note: A very good understanding of colloquial English needed!

Translation: LHC scientists have witnessed what they think is their first Beauty Particle!

Definitely one for a few beers down the pub!

Keep searchin',

theregister.co.uk uses the word "boffin" to mean "scientist" . Can anybody explain to me why?

That is a very British term that is not often used any more.

The Wikipedia article gives a very good summary. For the comment about the name of the cafe that the early radar scientists visited, I suspect the cafe was named after the scientists to improve business! I prefer the wartime obfuscation of "Back OFFice INtelligence" as the most plausible source.

The term boffin in the Register article is used in a humorous manner to highlight how completely incomprehensible the LHC and the LHC science is for 'normal' people... Let alone for mere journalists to have any hope of understanding even just one atom of the story!

Perhaps the journalist is just admitting that he hasn't got a clue as to what it is all about?

Martin
