Do they only produce fruit once?

I believe this is true. I have never left the plant in the ground after picking the fruit because I was told they only produce one. This would account for the enormous amounts of land required for pineapple production.

Apparently, that is true but not the whole truth.

"After the first fruit is produced, side shoots (called 'suckers' by commercial growers) are produced in the leaf axils of the main stem. These may be removed for propagation, or left to produce additional fruits on the original plant."

Furthermore, plants grown from suckers fruit faster than those grown from crowns. Search how to do it.

[edit]
Chris, England is hardly in a tropical zone. Also, if you left fruit at the bottom of the crown when you planted it, that's wrong.

RE: "After the first fruit

Well. I am smarter now then yesterday. Unfortunately it was yesterday that I pulled my pineapple out of the ground. Going forward I will allow them to continue to grow. If I can get 3 suckers off the plant that produce one pineapple each then that would triple my production. Look out Dole!!!!!

For what it is worth I have always included some pineapple flesh with the crown when I re-pot. They have always rooted and grown.

thanks for the post david. most informative. I was surprised that they offer very little in the way of nutrition.

I know you weren't around on the 17th of February, 1600CE, Chris, but would you have volunteered as chief stake flamer?

Poor Giordano Bruno :( all he said was that he thought the sun was a star.

No, I would have rescued Joan of Arc in 1431.

Well Sir Lancelot rather cornered the market with a cartel, then came along emancipation, and the bottom sort of dropped out of the market really. Not much call for it these days. You can't get a second hand shield and sword on Ebay for love nor money :-(

I felt a bit left out after your views upon a certain business arrangement between the EU & the USA, so I thought I'd join in. But we don't talk politics here, nor religion.

I know that mere minions may not question their Queen, but I assume loyal subjects are to be allowed a few words with due deference :-)))

BTW, how does one get promotion from Loyal Subject to Courtier, nothing on Wikpedia that I can find? I had thought of being an aide-de-camp but I can't do the walk and the limp wrist bit. Sorry about that.

CV to follow.
