They're hushing-up my nose, Bill. It took them by surprise because I don't file flight plans and whatnot.

So do I :) That is an exceedingly delectable looking pineapple, robl!

It is a 4th generation pineapple picked 20 minutes ago from the backyard. By 4th gen I mean that I have grown 3 plants from the top of the original. When they are golden like this you can eat the center stalk. It is still fibrous and crunchy but it is tender enough to eat. Is she not beautiful?
I love the stalk in pineapples! And they don't squirt juice down your chin nearly as much as the other bits do.

It seems you'll have to post your interesting Sunday in here after all, David.
Sunday? What was so interesting about Sunday? I'm so completely worn out from Tuesday that I don't remember.
Oh, I remember now. I was on 3142 and dispatcher. Army was back, helping Track with the other rail on 2. Signal was doing their part of that.
CRT 1268/1797, run by Lawyer, was ready for service first. He felt the need to tell me all about the track project, since he had just learned about it himself. I sat down and talked for a while with Coach Conductor and his Trainman and Saturday's CA&E Motorman. After Conductor and Trainman walked off to check with the steam guys, CA&E Motorman explained to me how he was suspending himself. With all this talking, I didn't get 3142 out until after 11:00.
After 1630 got on its train and shoved out to the West Station Lead, it took two or three of us several minutes to get it a lineup into 2.
A bit later, I was trying to line 1268 into 1, but it wouldn't come in. I could get a lineup into 2 or the wye, but not 1. Switch 96 was physically throwing when I told it to, but it thought it wasn't, giving an "out of correspondence" indication. Signal guy had left for a while. When 1268 got there, Lawyer messed with it too and we finally put both switches on Hand. I made him an Operator of CP Spaulding for the purpose of doing that every time; then he would put them back on Power so 1630 could get a lineup into 2. A while later, I was going by and saw that Signal guy was back, so I stopped briefly and told him about the problem. The next time I returned to Depot St., I closed the car and went over to see how he was doing. He was inside the lower level of the tower, poking at circuits. He said the problem was with a timer and he should replace it, but it should be good for the rest of the day.
1630's Conductor had arranged for another conductor to take over for him in mid-afternoon. He's a young pup, and brought another young pup with him as student. They technically demoted the previous Trainman to Car Host, thereby making the entire operating crew under age 26; they then posed for a picture. He also replaced the marker paddles on the rear with kerosene lanterns (not lit) and placed a genuine Rock Island commuter train sign on the rear (we're currently using Rock cars). Then they decided that after they returned from their 4:00 trip and 1268 departed for its 5:00, they wanted to see if 1630 could go into 1 without damaging anything. I gave 1268 an order to return to Signal 91 and call (the same order CA&E blew Saturday) and authorized 1630 to shove west out of 2 and cut off the train. Then I let them come into 1. This operation drew a lot of spectators, both visitors and volunteers. A couple of steam guys were on the platform watching closely as 1630 crept in. Each revolution of the drivers, the engineer stopped and inched it forward as the other guys looked to see if the bolt head on the eccentric would hit the raised wooden edge of the station platform. It made a lot of small dents in the wood, which one guy was marking with orange paint until someone pointed out it would be different spots each time. I think there is still some concern it could hit the metal posts that back up the wood, so they probably won't do it again. I had to stop them before they backed out to the train again without my permission.
In the middle of all that, 8537 wanted to come out of Yard 4 west and do some switching in Yard 3. They seemed a bit annoyed that I didn't want to move 3142 from Depot St. and told them to go all the way reverse around the Car Line to get there, and their mood did not improve.
I stopped for gas, a crummy pizza, and a large drink on my way home.

This top will find its way to a pot where it will live for a couple of weeks. Then into the ground. Maybe next year or 2 or 3 years from now before the next fruit. Oh, I had her under a galvanized 1/2" wire cage. The squirrels will do a number on these so a cage is good all around. Besides I had a bountiful crop of Lychee this year on the two trees which fed the squirrels and neighbors.
That looks delicious!!!
Pineapples that ripen on the plant are unlike the store bought variety. I was never a fancier of pineapple until a lady at work brought one in from her garden. It was incredible and so "was" this one - very juicy, with a touch of vanilla. I don't know why the vanilla but all that I have grown have this quality. I will be going to the local store and asking for pineapple tops and start growing more. This one's top is already in a pot and should start to root soon. I remember an island west of Okinawa that was covered with pineapples - and cobras. Yikes!!!
Got a call from Superintendent this evening, wanting to hear about Tuesday. He needs to do some further talking to other people before making a final determination, but I'm not suspended... yet. The major thing I did wrong, which probably but not definitely caused the problem, is something I will now remember forever. He said I should go ahead and report as scheduled this weekend.

What kind of climate do you need to grow pineapples? Would they survive a Chicago winter?

I think frost is a killer. But I guess if you pot them indoors with some sunlight they could be a goer ?

A "biscuit" of course!! Brand is a bit tougher as you don't live anywhere near me but could it be "Milkbone".
David why are YOU being suspended, I thought the other guy messed up and he suspended himself?
Annie you don't need to file a flight plan, you just have to watch out for those that do, as they think they have the right of way.
