You have not attached to a project
once you do then it will change....

To start crunching on a project, you have to attach to a project (in the GUI, it would be under Options, I believe, for the CLI, there is a command line option that I cannot remember). The instructions change in 4.2x.
If you have done this, you should be crunching. Your machine does not have to be connected to the project servers except occasionally to get, return, and report work.
You attach to the projects of your choosing, and join the team (one per project) or your choosing.
