This evening I noted the computer was only running 1 task (on a Quad Core2). Usually running 4. When that task completed, all 4 cores went idle. I have 24 work units but none have started. Please advise.

The long running S5R6 run has now finished with all new tasks for this run being 'out in the field' and with no new tasks left on the server. If you check the server status page, you can see this and you will notice that there is a new run called S5GCE (for Global Correlation Engineering) to replace it. The only S5R6 tasks that will be distributed by the server will be 'resends' which will replace existing tasks which error out, fail to validate, or are not returned by the host within the deadline. These will likely continue in ever decreasing numbers for several weeks or months from now.

If you take a look at your task list on the website, you will see that you have been allocated quite a few of the new S5GCE tasks. Before you can start crunching them, you will need to have the new executables and all the relevant large data files downloaded to your machine and BOINC will handle this automatically. As this is a major tramsition with vast numbers of hosts all needing these extensive downloads, the server and the various mirrors are having trouble keeping up with the demand. Perhaps your machine has not been able to download all the needed files yet. If you open up BOINC Manager and look on the 'messages' tab, you will be able to see what is going on. Also look on the 'transfers' tab and see if any particular downloads are stuck. You can always 'select' a stuck transfer and then try the 'retry' button to see if you can encourage it to complete.

If this is indeed the cause of your 'problem', just be patient and all will eventually come good. If you have no stuck transfers, this is not your problem and you will need to supply more information about your setup.

Cheers,
Gary.

Einstein isn't run from Berkeley, but instead from the University of Wisconsin and the MPI for Gravitational Physics, Hannover, Germany.

Thanks, Gary, that is just

Thanks, Gary, that is just what happened. I restarted a stalled download, and some time later I came back and the CPUs have been busy ever since. Well, hooray for the milestone of completion of S5R6!! I have been pleased to be able to donate all these CPU-seconds to the project, and my personal interest in astronomy makes it satisfying that I can take some small but real part in new science in this area. It's great to hear about the results when they come out.
