How do we know if something is found?

Quick question - Is there any way to see within the E@H Graphics that the program has found something while crunching. If not, should there not be a different colored dot to indicate where something new and interesting is found? I think it would keep people more interested in the graphics.....

I'm surprised there isn't

I'm surprised there isn't something in place to let us know what's been found. Actually, I think there should be more feedback in all the BOINC programs. I really think SETISpy or SETI Monitor features should be built into BOINC, where one can view a history of all previous computations and any information that we might find interesting.

I hope Einstein@Home staff see this post and think about finding a way to have something in the screen saver show where interesting signals have been found.

Please click on the + at the bottom of this post to give it a higher rating and keep bumping it until Einstein@Home staff see it/comment on it. I'd love to see this feature built in and I bet a lot of you do too.

I am sure that they will see it without the need to bump it. Keep in mind that what you are asking for will probably require significant enhancements to BOINC, and not just to Einstein. First things first though, we need a stable BOINC client and stable Einstein apps and a solid backend system. Once all that is in place, then work can start on enhancements. I like your ideas though. You should check out Pirates@home, because that is where a lot of the development work for Einstein is done.

We are aware of the fact that we need to give more user feedback in the screensaver and elsewhere. Eric Myers and Bruce Allen have talked about this in the past and I would not be surprised if there is a newer version of the screensaver being developed and tested right now.

The Einstein@Home developers have been working on issues with the back-end and other stuff that is not very visible to the users but still very important. Once those issues are worked out we will have more time to work on the user interface.

Currently our users have been making a significant contribution without totally knowing what they are working on. You are definitely appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, but don't start if you are not going to keep it going. One of the worst parts of the BOINC community is that the Participants feel unappreciated and "kept in the dark". We get a small improvement, such as SETI@Home adding a technical news page, a few items are added, then we start to get the one update a month.

Yes, its hard. If it was easy, anyone could play. One of the suggestions is that you actually make it a daily update. I believe the correct term is BLOG now. Since I have never run into one, I am not sure I would recognize it unless it bit me.

But, each project has people assigned, each day you do something, if that is added to the "project news" or techincal news, well, it tells us that there is actually something going on.

a) we made back-up tapes today and fixed a minor screen problem on the main server.
b) Joe, worked on proposals
c) Bill got married, but came to work anyway and found the bug in the display driver. We just don't know how to fix it.

Yes, but, see above. We trust you that you won't fib, just tell us we have been trying to find the reason 'x' is happening and made patches to the folowing fiels ....

Yes, well this is another subject, and the old SETI project had the science information pages where articles and information was collected. Again, if you added one new little paper, your CV, Doctorial Dissertatios, whatever, we be content ... shows us you are alive ...
