Hello
Einstein@Home had the nerve to steal my Mac OS X account name! If my account name wasn't a pseudonym, now my real name would have been shown here. This is a scandalous violation of privacy.
Eventuelly I found where to change my user name. Anyway, I'm very upset about how you handle private data. So I want to quit Einstein@Home. I cant find any information about that, so please tell me how to delete my account.

You can't delete your account, only Admins can do that and they really really hate to do that as this is about Science and that means stuff to a Scientist. What you can do though is change all of your data to junk, your name, password, where you are from everything, and then never come back using that account again.

I'm sorry you had this problem, and I'll try to assure that we take our volunteers data privacy seriously. It's been a long time since I signed up, so I don't remember the exact steps. But can you tell me what you did? I remember putting in an email address and password, and then selecting a username, which did not default to anything (the field was blank). What did you see? What steps did you take?
I may be the case the BOINC client for Mac OSX may be responsible for selecting a username. In which case we should try to figure out how that occurs.

My Einstein@Home name defaulted to my computer account name as well, using Windows 10, so I don't think it's purely a MacOS client issue. I can't remember myself what I saw when I signed up (even though it was only a couple days ago) but I'm not sure I recall seeing a username field anywhere...jeeze my memory is terrible.
At least in my case my computer account name is Chandrasekhar, rather than my real name, so I wasn't too miffed...

That has nothing to do with the topic of this thread. Volunteers can certainly choose to show or not show non-sensitive information about their computers as they see fit. But what has that to do with a local computer account name being used as a user account name on this site?
For those of us who joined many years ago when the website was BOINC-based rather than Drupal=based, there would have been a certain procedure (I don't remember exact details) which could be quite different from what a new user these days is required to do. There are also 'account managers' (of which I have zero experience) which may be involved so it's best if the admins try to sort out what might be happening in the previous reported cases. Showing or not showing computers is very unlikely to be involved in any way.
When people ask for help with problems, it saves a *lot* of time and back and forth question and answer messages if the helper can immediately pull up the computer(s) involved and have a look at things like the tasks list and the scheduler logs. Very often the problem can be solved immediately this way with very little description needing to be provided by the person asking.
The important point to remember is that the information revealed by showing your computers is non-sensitive and poses no additional risk to your security. It vastly enhances your chances of getting questions answered and problems resolved. It saves you time and a lot of time and effort for the person trying to help. Of course, all volunteers are free to set this whichever way they choose.
Cheers,
Gary.
