Hello,
as a new member of the very good heise.de-team Special: Off-Topic I have to give all of you a very important tip to fasten the crunching!
Although I don't like this shitty Linux, I tested it with this quality-project (Qualitäts-Projekt).
And the outcome: Linux is f*cking slow! Microsofts gooood Windows is much faster!!!!!!11111one
So everybody kill your Linux and install Windows for best performance!
This behaviour of myself is very generous, because when you crunch faster, my good position will fall down ...
Think about it!

Hint to increase the speeeeeeeeed
)
Hi
But remember.
There are a lot crunchers out there who thinking that windows is shitty.
Because they had much trouble with.
I´m on win xp and see all day that linux results giving much lower credits etc.
But its so....

"Timbuktu Oral", if You had browse message boards, You would notice, that this problem was raised many times.
And the hint is to run EAH under wine. Try it yourself.

Or, better still, do like me and dump Einstein entirely. The problem is with the project, not Linux.
Be lucky,

Timbuktu: The CPU time I'm
)
Timbuktu:
The CPU time I'm donating for Einstein@home is from my DNS and e-mail server.
If you can tell me how to use Windows to perform this networking tasks securely, efficiently, using very little hardware resources, and without paying for any software license, then perhaps I will move to Windows. If not, I will stay using Linux, that is a really great operating system, and it's free.
As has been said, the problem is not caused by Linux. Is a question of floating point arithmetics optimization in different C compilers. The gcc compiler, by default seems more conservative, and the einstein client compiled on it achieves higher numerical precission but lower speed than the client compiled with Microsoft Visual C.
I suppose the einstein@home developers are avoiding the use of gcc's -ffast-math options, in order to preserve the best numerical precission (they have alredy enough validation problems). But Microsoft Visual C probably works in a different way...
@josep i am not going to
)
@josep
i am not going to dive into the win vs linux discussion (especially as no side will ever "win" - even if the quality of one product over the other would justify this), but as far as i know, BIND is available for windows as well.
not sure how it looks with free emailservers (comparable to qmail) as i only worked with merak/imail/exchange on the windows side so far, but i am sure there are free ones as well.
as the firewall should not be on the server anyway, the only security risc should be the service ports and that would map to non ms services in the free software approach, so security should not be any different from the linux approach.
IMO to everyone the os he likes best :)

Well, best performance isn't free! You have to pay at least for the great Windoes Server 2003! But with this wonderful piece of software you own the best operation system on the world!!!111one
And Linux is NOT free! You have to consider the hundred of hours one has to learn the difficulties of this OS and the programs you use. With Microsoft Windows 2003 Server you can start right now and need only few hours as a newbie to learn how to operate ...

Yeah, you say it, Microsofts compiler is faster and has at least the same precision! Or do you say that the results from einstein with Windows aren't as exact as from linux?
Think about it!

Please be careful not to let the door hit you in the arse on your way out!!

Thank you FZB, I know that
)
Thank you FZB, I know that several good open-source server programs (BIND, Apache, etc) have been ported to Windows. I was not trying to discuss which operating system is best. I use both, Windows and Linux, an both are usefull for me, in different ways.
My post expresses only that I desagree with Timbuktu's assertion: Linux is not a f*ing slow OS, as he has said. Windows based Internet servers usually need much faster machines than Linux ones, to do the same job.
And yes, Timbuktu, Windows 2003 Server is nice, and easy to use for a Windows user, but expensive. And, as far as I know, some of his most efficient networking services are so good simply because Microsoft has ported them from FreeBSD. So it's not true that expensive applications are always the best ones.
The speed differences in Einstein@home are differences caused by compilers. This is the only thing I was trying to explain. And it's true: It seems that Windows E@H clients are returning results faster but with lower numerical precission. This has been already discussed here:
http://einsteinathome.org/node/188420
And that seems to be the reason for the validation problems we have suffered in this project. Linux results seem to be more consistent, but the validator usually relies on Windows results, because there are fewer Linux machines here..

You can do Linux the "hard" way; installing, tailloring, tuning to the very edge (gentoo way, lot of fun though if you want to learn), but with modern distro's like SuSE setting up a server is no more work as with the win server or stand alone PC, even my old mum can use the machine (configured by me) for every day's "working" and don't face the risk of messing up the stuff as she easily managed to do under billy's OS's.

Yeh quick and dirty by Bill himself giving the trailing 00 problems in the stat* files. see applicable threads.
The developers are very quiet about this; any new info already available ??
Throwing in the bin all win results and start over again ?? ;-)
Greetings,
John,
I guess what Timbuktu Oral is
)
I guess what Timbuktu Oral is trying to say is :
"Hi! I'm a Spammer, BAN ME please..."
I'd rather de-attach from Einstein, rather than spend more money on Spyware OS'es than 3 entire new HighEnd-Systems would cost me, and be additionally left with only 20% of the functionality that Linux offers right off the shelf *rolleyes*
If they don't fix the Problem by 01 Jun 2005, I'll leave as well (I just don't like wasting CPU Cycles to programmed inefficiency)
