Topic 188235

Hi, I recently got involved in Einstein@Home and realized that the computers that sit in my community college’s library would be ideal candidates for crunching numbers. They are all Dell drones, lacking stimulation. I was wondering if you all thought it would be possible for me to get my community college (Austin Community College) to run BOINC on all of their lab computers. Any thoughts on how to approach this idea?

Sincerely,
Chris

Help me help you!

Chris,
I think it's a great idea! I'd print out the information here, read up on what the project's goal and methodology is, and then approach the person in charge. You might want to call the dean's office and ask for a meeting. It's possible they might go along with it. You know until you ask. I'd suggest starting a team with the name of the college and having all computers part of that team. Ask if you can write up some information for the school paper or for the school website.

For a school administrator this will likely be a key selling point. Show them sites like BOINC Stats and Mundayweb, and show them team names in sig graphics like mine. Then remind them this project is International in scope and that people from all around the world will hear of your school and see its name. Plus, as StarCharter suggests, with a little media exposure and maybe a team website your school can connect itself to a widely known cutting edge scientific endeavor, and all for the cost of a little extra electricity to machines that are already on. Most important of all, but perhaps least on the list of those in charge of administering poilicies, would be the fact that it is in the Interest of Science. You should also go and get the support of your Physics or Sciences department as they are likely the ones the administration will ask to confirm that this all legitimate, secure, and scientific. Good luck!

Even if the school turns you

Even if the school turns you down you still have access to a lot of people at the school. Most of which will probably have computers. You can put flyers on the bullentin boards and mention it to everyone you talk to. I would think that there are more PCs owned by students than the school has so it would be well worth looking into.
School news paper is a good idea. The professors may even help by mentioning it in their classes if you ask them even if they don't let you put it on the schooll Pcs.

Perhaps if you have a science related class then you could do a report or research paper on Einstein@home or Boinc in general.
See if there are any upcomeing related lectures that you could attend and talk to others about it or hand out flyers.
maybey when useing the PCs in the library you could leave a flyer, a peice of scrap paper with the URL laying beside of the PC when your done for others and of course leave the home page on the screen when your done for the next person.
You might even set the Einstein@home home page as the default site when starting the browser. How about the desktop background? If you can change it and not get in trouble then what's to loose?
Try to get a different PC each time you go to the library and make it a point to shoulder surf to see if all you set up on the other PCs is still set up.
But I feel I should also point out that the rules state that you can not install and run Boinc on a PC unless autherized by the owner.
A few months ago A guy lost his job for the state of Ohio or Indiana or somewhere for running SETI on the state govn. PCs.

Number crunching on Intel is a freakin' waste of electricity and money. Go Apple or AMD or that lab will be suffering.

You didn't understand that

You didn't understand that message. Its work is what's wasted. There are a great number of retards here who don't bother to understand facts and so screw themselves over. They're cowards so they don't want to argue but run away without being shown wrong.

Don't get me wrong, but please could you be this kind to tell me, what's wrong, not to bother understanding facts?
