Hi,

All Tasks Gamma Ray Pulsar Search #3 1-09 (FGRPopencl-nvidia) do not work properly on my PC (ID 7163667). Running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit with two EVGA GTX670 2GB (default mode). Both cards are ok (tested). Each of them is normally runnung 4 tasks but not FGRP ones (0.2 CPU + 0.25 GPU) which results in a utilization of the GPUs of about 95%.

Now, starting with the first GRPS (FGRPopencl-nvidia) one of the GCs change from "4 tasks running mode" to "one task runnung mode" using 1 CPU + 1 GPU (processing time less than 2 hours). Checking the GC with GPU-Z informs me that utilization is falling back to about 25% average ("verifyed" by remarkable lower GPU-temperature). But the real time using of the GPUs is "pulsing", meaning changing utilization between 0% and about 65% with 0%-gaps between the "pulses" (about the same with as the "pulses" itself).

I'm up to date with my system ... all Win updates done, newest graphics driver from Nvidia (334.89) and newest BOINC driver 7.2.39 (x-64). I'm not willing to play around with older driver versions. Hard and soft restarts done. And, yes, I want to run this PC using the full power of both graphic cards.

Could someone be so kind to explain me - as a non-specialist - what happend and if I would be able to change things ? Otherwise I will abort all GRPS #3 FRGP tasks waiting for BRPSs (Perseus Arm Survey) which are working fine with the GPUs. In addition on the CPUs there are running some GRPSs (not marked with FGRPopencl-nvidia) with no problems.

Many thanks in advance for any help !

Best regards,
Arthur

GRPS #3 1.09 (FGRPopencl-nvidia) not working properly

Read the Technical News thread which announced the new FGRP3 apps.

Quoted from the first post in that thread:

Quote:
- OpenCL versions for AMD, NVidia and Intel GPUs. As we did with the first BRP GPU apps, so far only the FFT will run on the GPU, the rest of the computation (which is still a lot) is done on the CPU. As the application develops, more and more computation will be shifted to the GPU. Note that in the project preferences setting there is (now) a "GPU utilization factor for FGRP" separate from the BRP one.

So this is the first release that's capable to run on GPUs and it will be improved over time and it's not a problem with your computer.
You could try to change the utilization factor and run 2 or 3 tasks at the same time to increase the load but do check the memory usage as this app uses quite a lot and running 4 might me pushing it. It will also reserve one CPU core per task so there will be less CPU task running.

If you don't like the way it runs then disable this search in your Einstein@Home preferences instead of downloading and aborting the tasks.

Short, clear and helpful,

Short, clear and helpful, thanks Holmis ! Wished I had such hints on "right mouse clicks" ...

Running on two EVGA GTX670:
- 4 tasks (0.2 CPUs + 0.25 NVIDIA GPUs (device 1))
- 1 FGRP task (1 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPUs (device 0)
- 5 tasks (CPUs)

CPU load about 90 % / Memory using about 35 %

GPU-Z shows up for device 0:
- Memory Used: 744 MB (max) from 2 GB
- GPU Load: 20 % (avarage)
- Memory Controller Load: 11 % (max)
- Power Consumption: 41 % (average)

So it should be possible to run two (or eventually 3) FGRP tasks at the same time, I think. But, setting the FGRP utilization factor to 0.5 nothing changes. After ending up with one FGRP task another is starting, but not two. Is there anything I have overseen ?

PC ID: 7163667 (home)
EAH settings for home:
- Run all applications
- GPU utilization factor BRP = 0.25
- GPU utilization factor FGRP = 0.5

Thanks,
Arthur

Probably the "hidden" fact that the utilization setting is only "downloaded" when new work is requested and issued, might even be that the right kind of work (FGRP3 GPU tasks) needs to be issued.
The setting will then apply to all work in the cache but the notation for already running work will be wrong until they are completed and new tasks are started.

And, just to add, it will be impossible to download that new work at the moment so you'll have to wait a bit - hopefully not too long :-).

Bernd is very good at updating Technical News threads when anything important changes. I know it can be hard to keep up with everything but it's well worth finding time for that board.

Cheers,
Gary.
