In a previous thread , a quote from a fiction book mentioned that someone would devote all his life to fight against the gravity . Of course, a bold act, but even though he walks on the sea or fly above the mountains , escaping so the gravity of the earth , what will he do with the "gravity" of the Great Magneto ? On the sea or above the mountains, he would hardly avoid that . The Great Magneto is always managing all the motion and circulation of things in the Universe . Two examples : a french friend of mine living in Strasbourg in France, in order getting ride of his dynamic cat,brought the cat with himself, travelling for the week-end with his car toward Berne in Switzerland, and he left the cat in Bern . When he came back home, just one week past, the cat joined his master's home in Strasbourg!Perhaps for all of living creatures, apart the orientation sense, there is traced some trajectory or " secret corridors " for all of our movements and circulation. Another friend of mine , in a day of total affective collapse felt himself so exhausted and empty of any energy, began a long walk at random in unknown quarters. He told me that it was like "some outsider force" conducted him in those quiet streets with houses keeping all some guard dogs or german shepherds, barking each at his passing by. In a crucial moment when he was completly absorbed by dark thoughts, accidently two very big savage black dogs, not chained , after barking for a while escaped the back-yard and attacked him violently in a manner that he felt himself totally wounded !

The Great Magneto !
)
It's a well known fact that many animals (such as homing pigeons) can sense magnetic north. No mysterious great magneto in the universe. Simply the poles of the planet.

Wow ! How amazing all of these X-men , specially Professor X ! Thank you Mr. and Mrs anon , you always enlighten me with your quotes ! LOL

Yes, but if the magnetic poles swap out with each other (as they are said to do every eon or so...) would the cat have shown up in Berlin, instead?
"No, I'm not a scientist... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express."

Barkster, thank you for your reply , by the way how we should read the sign just behind you : 666 ? or 999 ? or ,,, ? or the inverse of the previous ? or reading in arabic alphabet or in japanese sign system of script ? Well anyway all depends on our location or position or cultural backrounds , you can find infinite interpretation for a single sign.

it's a road sign for a possibly real highway in the USA...but i think the message here might be: signpost dead ahead...route 666...the highway to hell.

Oh Michel, thank you for the explanation , I 've been enlightened,LOL.

Most likely, until they get used to the new poles. I've never seen it theorized that the poles swap. What are the supposed forces that could cause this? They would have to amazingly powerful. I believe this would be catastrophic to the planet if this happened.
Ariane, you aren't a Breatharian are you?
Sceince can not explain why
)
Sceince can not explain why Earth's magnetic field reverses, mainly because we don't know enough about the details of how the field is generated and propagates out from the Earth's core. The leading current idea is that the field gets so tangled up at the boundry between the liquid core and the mantle that it temporarily cancels itself out. Once the field gets untangled it may reappear in either the original or reversed polarity.
When lave cools the then current orientation of the magnetic field is locked into the rock.
Geologist used the observation of the field reversals froozen into the oceanic crust to establish the theory of continental dirft.
Scientific American has a special edition out currently (until the 25th) that contains articles about this and other Earth science topics. I highly recommend it.
The magnetic poles do change
)
The magnetic poles do change more or less regulary, about every 250 000 years. This can be observed historically by looking at the magnetisation of solidified lava from different time periods.
The last reversal took place about 760 000 years ago so it is likely that ther will be a new reversel within the next few thousand years. Geologically soon, but not something to sit and wait for.
The reasons for these reversals are not well understood. There has been several proposed mechanisms but we do not yet know which one is right. These kinds of changes can be observed on shorter timescales too. There are for example some areas in the ocean around antarctica which have lost their magnetic field during the last 200 years.
