I get that all the time on one of my Macs (a G4/400 running OS 10.3.9 Server), and its name is definitely configured correctly, at least as far as all the other systems on the LAN are concerned. But the error seems harmless enough, and since it’s only the one machine, I can still identify it easily on my hosts page. One of these days I might try editing client_state.xml or whatever file BOINC uses to store that information, but it’s not a high priority of mine …

BOINC couldn't resolve your

BOINC couldn't resolve your computer's host name or IP address. Your firewall may be blocking communications on port 80, or you are behind a proxy server.

Solution: Make sure your firewall allows BOINC through on port 80. If using a proxy server, set it up in BOINC. If you are using your computer at work, ask your boss or IT department for permission to use BOINC.

Or if you want to have lots of nasties on your PC, be my guest... but else... don't. Allow BOINC in your firewall's trusted options.

Have you tried the new BOINC 5.8.8 that came out yesterday? It uses a newer version of libCurl to communicate with the projects. It may well fix this problem for you. Just install it over the present version of BOINC. Download clicky.

If 5.8.8 still gives you this problem, please post the first 20 to 30 messages from BOINC startup here.

JFTR my ‘nameless’ Mac has absolutely no difficulty connecting with BOINC projects (when they’re up!) and its BOINC Manager has no problems communicating with the daemon or science apps. Wouldn’t a firewall or proxy issue have further effects than just preventing the hostname from being found?
