I've noticed that about half my recent jobs get Compute Errors at some point in the process. It's a shame that all the time is being wasted.
Does anybody have any ideas about what might be going wrong and what I could do to rectify things?

Particularly, I wonder whether:
*** I set it to work while I'm inactive for 1 minute. Perhaps it clears RAM as soon as I become active, and somehow it loses something....
*** Perhaps it has something to do with a network connection?
*** Perhaps it doesn't like the screensaver? (See following "red" log message:)

Try just setting your screensaver to one of the Windows (assuming you're using Windows) screensaver. Many crunchers set their screensavers to go blank because they want every spare cycle going to the science app.
