Hi,
ok, that's yet another "my screensaver won't work" posting.
I just set up my new system, based on Linux Fedora Core 8 x86_64, running on an Intel Quadcore. I installed the stock boinc-client and boinc-manager from the Fedora distribution, both in the x86_64 version.
I just attached to the project and everything's working fine to far except the graphics. When I hit the "Show Graphics" button in the Boinc Manager, nothing appears, but boinc seems to try to start the graphic-app which seems to crash:
# ps -ef | grep defunct boinc 30608 11418 0 16:54 ? 00:00:00 [einstein_S5R3_4] boinc 30613 12694 0 16:55 ? 00:00:00 [einstein_S5R3_4]
The number of defunct processes increases when I hit the "Show Graphics" button multiple times.
On FC8 the boinc-client itself runs as user "boinc" and I attach to the client (as another user) using "select computer", "localhost" plus the password provided in gui_rpc_auth.cfg.
I wanted to stick with the boinc-software provided by FC8, but if that doesn't solve my problem I might install a stock boinc directly to my $HOME.
Any idea if that's a side-effect of running client and manager as different users or is that something else?
Alex.

FC8: graphics won't start and leaves defunct processes behind

I believe so. Try (as yourself)
[pre]xhost +si:localuser:boinc[/pre]
and then try opening the graphics.

Hi,
thanks a lot, that really worked. Woooo, I never that you can actually allow certain users (instead of whole hosts) to use the screen. That's certainly really cool.
That's definitively stuff for some FAQ.
Thanks a lot!
Alex.

Thank Eric Myers. He's the one who figured it out :-)
I'll also see if Jord can add it to the FAQ Service.

Unfortunately, not so lucky here:
Einstein@Home graphics stills seem to start only defunct processes even after the above fixes (no clues as of why in logs). Seti and climateprediction graphics started to work, though, so it's likely just an einstein problem. Other projects I'm running do not have grahics (Show graphics button stays greyed out even when the task is running).
I'm Running latest available BOINC from std yum Fedora 8 repository:
boinc-manager-5.10.45-14.20080315svn.fc8
boinc-client-5.10.45-14.20080315svn.fc8
on a Fedora 8 Linux (kernel 2.6.25.9-40.fc8), with nvidia 5650 (laptop) graphics card with livna packaged binary drivers (nvidia proprietary).
