That's the culprit.
The science application expects a "heartbeat" message from the BOINC client every 30 seconds and those 30 seconds are taken from the system clock. So, if that gets reset (probably by contacting a time server) in the "wrong" direction, a "No heartbeat from core client for 30 sec - exiting" message is written to stderr and acted upon accordingly.
So, if those exits with zero status (which indicates that no error has occured) only happen after adjusting the system clock, just ignore them.
