Emmy Noether is one of my favorite female physicists. She is a legend for her theorem relating continuous symmetries to conserved quantities. That is a really deep and general result that speaks alot about the logic of the Universe we are in, not just a spot of snappy maths. Sadly she died relatively young from complications of surgery for a tumour. She was a friend and collaborator of Albert Einstein. So that gives extra significance to the award ( if you are into such correlations ).
Cheers, Mike.
( edit ) To bang the drum on Dr Pletsch's behalf, the requirement for funding a project is "if the scientific standards are outstanding" .... :-)
