I set up BOINC in Mid December and joined SETI and Einstein. (I ran SETI Classic since 2000.) Everything went smoothly and both projects downloaded WUs without a problem. Then my old computer started crashing about 5 times a day. BOINC appeared to be using up my resources, so I experimented with some BOINC settings. This caused my WUs to go from 70 hours to 200 hours for completion. As a last ditch effort, I clicked "no new work" for Einstein and focused on SETI while I worked on freeing resources on my computer.

By mid-January, I felt that my system could handle Einstein, so I changed my preferences and allowed work again. I "updated" but it wouldn't download any WUs. I've tried updating several times, I've read the WIKI, the BOINC manual, and dozens of message board threads, but cannot find an answer. I thought about pushing the "reset project" button, but read that that should only be done if nothing else works.

My computer is a P-II 333MHz, 384 MB RAM, with almost 17 Gigs free on the partition with BOINC. I run Win98 SE and have a always on cable connection. Now, I run my computer about 16 hours a day, rebooting once every 8 hr to free resources. I have a software firewall and antivirus software (TrendMicro). FYI, I've had no problems getting WUs for SETI.

This is the typical message I get when I try to update Einstein:
2/7/06 10:07:14 PM|Einstein@Home|Sending scheduler request to http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/EinsteinAtHome_cgi/cgi
2/7/06 10:07:14 PM|Einstein@Home|Reason: Requested by user

2/7/06 10:09:54 PM||Suspending computation and network activity - user is active

This is the typical message when I start BOINC:

2/7/06 7:01:57 PM||General prefs: using your defaults

For three weeks, I've been trying to get WUs for Einstein. Any help would be appreciated. Please don't send me to other boards or threads - been there, done that, it didn't help.

Einstein@H Won't Download any WUs

Reading the FAQ finds this:
In other cases, your machine will not be sent work because the scheduler has estimated that the work would not be completed in time (before the reporting deadline). This estimate takes into account a number of factors: (1) the amount of work currently queued on your machine, (2) the resource share fraction devoted to Einstein@Home (as opposed to other BOINC projects) (3) the fraction of time that your machine is turned on, (4) the fraction of THAT time during which your machine is available for running BOINC. In this case, you can leave your machine on more of the time (the scheduler will notice this over a period of a few days and start sending larger amounts of work) or you can change your preferences for when BOINC runs on your machine (for example, set it so that BOINC runs all the time, instead of only when your machine is idle.)

Do you think this might be your problem with your old machine, and the newer version of Einstein?

Hey Pooh Bear, I remember reading that part of the FAQ. This caused me to change my preferences to give SETI and Einstein 100% each (which is really 50% each), switching between projects every 60 minutes. I set BOINC to work only after idle for 1 minute and to keep the work in the swap file which has shortened the time need for WUs. SETI has run 6 WUs in the past 3 weeks, with completion times varing from 31 hours to 65 hours. SETI and Einstein both have 14 day deadlines, so time should not be a problem.

However, you bring up a good point. The only Einstein WU I completed took around 200 hours and ran several days past the dealine (and it ran to the exclusion of SETI). Could that be the reason why the Einstein scheduler won't give me work? Yet the FAQ states scheduler should notice changes in settings/preferences that affect the above factors. I've waited 3 weeks for scheduler to "notice" the changes. ...I find this all very confusing.

As far as the problem being a conflict with my older machine and the newer Einstein...I have no idea. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can answer this question.

Hi Deb H, You may have to

Hi Deb H,
You may have to "detach and reattach" your machine to the project in order to get new work. The reason being, your machine is reporting an average turnaround time of 14.29 days which is longer than the deadline for workunits in this project. When you reattach you will recieve a new host ID with a clean slate (so to speak) which should download new work. You can merge the old host with the new one afterwards. You may have to give Einstein@Home a little bit more resource share than Seti in order to finish the work in time.

Deb H, The problem may be

Deb H,

The problem may be that since you've been running solely Seti recently, that Seti has simply filled you work queue to the point where Boinc doesn't think it can take on an Einstein and make deadlines. You might try setting Seti to No New Work for a day or so, and see if it can squeeze an Einstein ito the schedule.

First of all what is your

First of all what is your connect to number? Running a slow computer with more than one project is a pain, especially if you do not run it 24/7, right now Boinc thinks you have enough work, plus the debt has to be evened out to get more Einstein WUs.

My suggestion is to set your connect to to .01 and run one project only....

Check the WIKI for DEBT rules......

I have only just noticed the problem today with my machine haven't been paying much attention to the client for a while.

I only knew the problem because an email came from Einstein to ask if I would come back to crunch.

Have reset the project and got new work

Thanks to all for the advice. Last night, I left my computer on with BOINC running. I woke up to a total hard drive failure. I'm using another computer to post, but I have lost all my personal data, so data recovery takes proirity over everything else. That being said...

To Richard M and Halifax--lad, I'll try the reset option, if I recover my data.

To Michael Roycraft, BOINC downloads only one SETI WU at a time. It fetches another WU when completion is around 90%. I don't see how the queue could be full, when there are no more than 2 WUs at any given time.

To Jim K, sorry I'm not computer savvy enoough to understand your question. I have no idea what a "connect to number" means. I most certainly don't know how to reset it. (Heck, I don't even know what W-I-K-I means!) Thanks for the link to "debt" - I'll look it up what I can.

Thanks to everyone - gotta go fix my computer.
