I am having a problem with PC locking up while running Einstein @home as of 14 Aug 06. Prior to the download, einstein was running fine on BOINC 5.2.? I did some troubleshooting and confirmed it was only Einstein as the problem by suspending Einstein and running SETI only for one day with no problems. I then resumed Einstein only to have it lock up in about 30 minutes. I then detached from Einstein and d/l BOINC 5.4.11 with the new Einstein @home client.
After all that I reattached and started processing when i locked up again after about 25 minutes.
I am running Windows 2k Pro SP4, with an AMD Athlon 2200 processor, 512 MB RAM, and a NVidia GeForce 2MX video card.
Thoughts?

If you disable the screensaver, does it still lock up?

No, it only locks up when I use Einstein@home.

Does it work when you run

Does it work when you run Einstein@Home without graphics (i.e. when you set your screensaver to "Blank" or "None" and watch the progress in the BOINC Manager)? Does it instantly hang when you mark the running Task and press the "Show graphics" button in the Manager?

Our graphics code hasn't changed for years, but we are linking a newer version of BOINC with the new 4.24 App. If the graphics is the problem, would you give it a try and update your graphics driver?

I changed to no screensaver and suspended SETI. It seems to be running and does not lock up when I click on "show graphics" It does not appear to hang immediately but only after a short duration.(5-30 minutes so far.) I'll stick with this through the weekend and post results on Monday. I'll update my graphics drivers and experiment with some other conditions. Perhaps it is a conflict with another program. This is odd that it should only happen with Einstein, as i do not see it with SETI.

Oh and thanks for the assistance everyone.

Having an up-to-date version of DirectX is important as well.

Check your messages if

Check your messages if possible, usually they can help you in the right direction ;)

Finally pried loose some time to t/s after getting a new job. Unless there is an error log, this will not work as I have to kill power to get my pc going again, which of course restarts my messages. One thing i have noticed is that the graphical display time is 17 hours 12 minutes ahead of the CPU time in BOINC. the last time I had the graphical display up and about 10 minutes after I restarted Einstein, my pc locked up again. I checked BOINC CPU time at start and then after my reboot.

there is, that is if you mean a seccondary way to get the info from the messages tab try..

C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\stdoutdae.txt

or what ever directory it was installd in.
