Is anyone else here from UW:Mil?

I find it awkward that the computers in the library and such, while sluggish already, DON'T donate to this project while idle, at least to the best of my knowledge. If anyone is from around UWM, maybe we could get a little referendum going or so.

Donating time on UW:Milwaukee's computers in the library, ect.

Hallo!
That theme was discussed also in our institut here in Germany, years ago.
2 reasons came up, not to support this:
1) Lack of personal to maintain it.
2) Additional net traffic, which has also to be paid.

To 1: The budget of universities and instituts are allways kept short or very short. So people have to work for what they are payed for, and have no time for extra work on other things, even these are importand and of very good reputation. And fact is, our pc´s require from time to time some attention by skilled persons. In bigger instituts with hundreds or even thousands of pc´s this time summs up unacceptably, also with modern techniques like maintenance over network etc..
To 2: The vastly increasing amount of network trafic of instituts consumes meanwhile an remarkabel part of the yearly budget. So instituts are interested to keep down unneccessary traffic.

On the otherhand instituts are interested to help each other as far as they can. So our administration decided not to ban activities of institut members in this regard if this is limited to pc´s they are directly resposible for. The IT department will give no support in this regard at all, and in case of any trouble with such pc, they will kill BOINC before asking.

As most institut members are interested first of all on their personal advantage, there is little activity for such/our project.

That´s my knowledge and longtime experience.

Kind regards
Martin
