The question is not how much you have free, but how much BOINC thinks you have free. Look in your message tab for a line like27/10/2008 23:58:57||Preferences limit disk usage to 1.86GB
If there's shown too little, check your computing preferences in the Disk and memory usage section.
And BOINC checks for free space on the partition where it is installed.
