I hope someone can tell me what this means. I have gotten the following messages:
3/27/2011 12:33:20 AM Einstein@Home Message from server: (reached daily quota of 24 tasks)
3/27/2011 8:53:29 AM Einstein@Home Message from server: (reached daily quota of 56 tasks)
The first one, I saw first thing this morning. When I used BOINC Tasks to force it to reort all completed tasks, it was able to get new tasks, but just a few minutes later, I got the next message. There is no way I could possibly have completed that many tasks in that time.
I did see one taks complete with a computational error, but that is the only other issue I have seen.
Thanks.

Daily Quota?!

I just saw another error in my log.
3/27/2011 8:52:32 AM Einstein@Home [error] Can't create link file slots/7/einsteinbinary_BRP3_1.07_windows_intelx86__BRP3cuda32.exe
Any ideas?
Yes, since 27 Mar 2011

Yes, since 27 Mar 2011 3:41:30 UTC, this computer has trashed about 60 tasks with that error. So, it's no wonder that your quota was reduced accordingly.
Check if the BOINC user still has access to the slot directory or if something else (AV scan) is blocking files in there.

I am the only user of this machine, and I do have admin rights to it. I looked in the slots directories. I don't really know what I'm lloking for, but everything looked ok.
I checked my AV program, its log doesnt show anything either.

AFAIK, BOINC gets an own user ID at installation time.
What has changed on that machine today around 3:30 UTC?

I did allow my AV program to update its files, but that was yesterday. Otherwise, this machine has done nothing, but run BOINC tasks.

Firstly, regarding the quota messages you first queried, they are nothing to do with tasks you have completed. The change from 24 to 56 doesn't mean you have suddenly completed an extra 32 tasks.
Actually, you start with a quota of 32 tasks per CPU core per day. This reduces by one for each bad result returned. A reduced quota will double (subject to the upper limit of 32) for each successfully calculated result returned (it doesn't even have to be a validated result).
So (with 8 cores) at one point you had a per CPU quota of 3. At a later stage you had 7. I guess you must have reported a lot of errors and the quota had been reduced to 3 and then you reported at least two good ones (3 -> 6 -> 12) and then a further 5 bad ones (12 -> 7) - or something like that. There would be other possibilities. When you look at the tasks list for the host in question, there are both good and bad results reported at various times (UTC) of the day for 27 March. It's quite likely that both good and bad results were reported simultaneously and I don't know how exactly the quota adjustments would be handled in that situation.
Now turning to the above quoted, actual error message. To understand it, you need to understand the slot directories and how they are populated. With 8 cores, you need at least 8 separate non-conflicting locations where calculations can be performed. So under the slots directory you will find a bunch of sub-directories, starting at 0 and incrementing to whatever upper number is actually needed. BOINC could place full copies of the executables and all the needed data files in each slot directory but this would be very wasteful of disk space. Instead, a link is used which points to where each real file is stored (the einstein project directory). In your case, BOINC (quite suddenly) seems to be being prevented from creating a link to the executable and so a whole bunch of tasks have been trashed without ever having started.
You mentioned in another message that you have looked in the slot directories and haven't noticed anything unusual. How closely did you look? There should be quite a number of actual files and quite a number of links to executables and to data files so it would be pretty easy not to see one missing. Because it is a missing executable that is being complained about, it's pretty easy to suspect (as Gundolf has already mentioned) that your AV software may very well be to blame.
Cheers,
Gary.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I didnt look @ my slots directories closely enough :(. Somehow, directory\7\ was missing. I have no idea how that could've happened since I'm the only user of the system and I didn't even know the slot directories existed till now. But after I created the\7 directory the errors stopped.
Thanks again.

Hi!
This is still very odd, as BOINC should be able to create that directory by itself if needed. The fact that you had to create it manually, while solving the problem for now, indicates there's something very wrong with your BOINC installation. You should monitor it closely or maybe re-install BOINC altogether.
