Hi!

The only game-console that I know of that is widely used for distributed computing is Sony's Playstation 3.

There are two approaches: crunching under the native PS3 Operating System (like Folding@Home does) or alternatively crunching under Linux like GPUgrid does (Sony used to allow this, but AFAIK the latest "slim" model does no longer allow this ...well...until someone does it anyway :-) ).

As for the X-box: I guess there are two obstacles. First, it's a rather closed platform and running Linux on it is regarded as a hack by Microsoft. So you can hardly expect support from MS. Secondly, the X-box-360 has a reputation (true or not) to have a heat dissipation issue, so getting people to use it for crunching while at the same time invalidating the warranty by installing some hack on it would be a difficult task, I guess.

MS has recently banned ~1M 360s from Xbox Live due to mod chips. This means there's currently a glut of pre-modded xboxes on the used market selling very cheap. I'm not aware of any projects that currently support the xbox though.

From what I gather on the forums on GPUgrid the latest Sony firmware would recognise you had Linux if you had it previously installed. If you didn't have it previously then you cannot install it. GPUgrid dropped support for the PS3 because of Sony's stance regarding this.
