Can anybody give a brief description of "Credits" what they are and what they can be used for.
Thank You
Graham
All projects (ie outside BOINC as well as within) provide some means of tracking users contribution as a way of giving thanks to participants and to keep them motivated.
Even when not being paid for their donations, a big enough proportion of volunteers like to get some kind of recognition back to make it an essential component of any large scale project.
Used by many participants for bragging, my quite a few for credit races etc, and ignored by some as being irrelevant as they only care about the science. A very small proportion claim to use the credits to diagnose their boxes' performance.
A rather neat way in my opinion to combine the motivation of competition with the motive of co-operation that brings anyone into any DC project.
BOINC introduced the idea of a stable currency in credit, the so called 'cobblestone' which is designed to be the same across different projects. In practice some projects turn out to be slightly more generous than others, just as an hour's work is paid more Euros in some EU countries than in others.
Non BOINC projects may count WU, or count some feature of their particular application.
That is a very brief overview - now see the wiki please if you have any follow on questions
