Why does E@H heats CPU that much?

I have Intel i7 920 and on full load (100% CPU time) it heats CPU cores up to 85C. Other BOINC apps can hardly reach 70C.

I had to lower usage to 80% to give my CPU chance to cool down.

Well that's a good sign for the quality of the app, and a bad sign for the quality of your cooling, isn't it?

People have complained a lot that the CUDA ABP2 app doesn't fully utilize the GPU as the temperature doesn't rise as much as with other projects' CUDA apps.

The GC1 CPU app however (especially the part of the computation that still has the handwritten assembly code in it which was mostly inspired by Akos's optimizations) is generating quite some heat because it used the CPU effectively. If that makes your CPU run too hot, you need to seriously consider the quality of your cooling solution. Even the GC1 app has left some more room for optimization, so that other programs might drive your CPU even hotter!!

Or at least a different than original equipment fan if the machine is store bought, or the fan is the one that came with the cpu. There are some VERY good fans out there and the ones that come standard with the cpu do not always work for us crunchers as well!

Or at least a different than original equipment fan if the machine is store bought, or the fan is the one that came with the cpu. There are some VERY good fans out there and the ones that come standard with the cpu do not always work for us crunchers as well!

so true, my other system came with the stock aluminum cooler. i changed that out, for at the time what was a very highly rated copper inset aluminum fin heatsink and some arctic silver ceramique thermal compound. those two things lowered the temps on that system by 10*f.. later moving the system out to the middle of the room as opposed to being with in 8 inches of a wall lowered temps by another 5*f.

my current system however is turning out to be a chore to find a new HSF. its a "slim" system im finding very few low profile coolers. atleast very few that arent wide to make up for the height difference :( lesson learned, no more slim systems :D

I haven't tried water cooling, yet. But, my favorite air cooler is a 120-mm upright Zalman. I've had good results with them on both of my high-performance systems.

I too use a Zalman on one of my systems, although MaximumPC, a magazine I read, likes this one alot!

yup, i found that out after the fact. i wasnt thinking at the time of purchase i just saw "sale!" and ran with it (it was rather cheap at the time)

then i discovered that finding a GPU that would fit would pretty much be impossible. oops!

on the bright side. this now gives me an excuse to look in to a new system case

See now that is what I like...a positive attitude out of adversity!! It also means you can now move up even higher into the ranks of the multiple computer set! Keep the little one running and build another better one!

Hello all...I have 5 case

Hello all...I have 5 case fans and 2 small north/south bridge fans, 2 HDD duel small fans per HDD. Now in winter all four Puters keep me nice and warm, there all in my living room, now in summer a whole diffrent story! Nothing gets over 95deg F at 100% with a CUDA card, fan on it of course. But liquid cooling is the only way to go...Funny though..put the towers in a refrigerator or make a refrig cooling box for the towers or even make a box with an window unit and funnel the ac into it..all dependant on yes...you guessed it MONEY.
