I frequently find BOINC not running in the morning when I come in apparently because there was a computation error in the Einstein@home project. I don't like the machine sitting idle and it could be doing work on another project. Is there a fix? If not I will suspend Einstein work and let the other projects have the time.

computation errors

Your computer has four reported tasks. The two most recent ones were successful. The two older ones have errors that point to files that should be in the project directory, but apparently couldn't be found or read by the application.

I'd suggest to run a filesystem check.

What am I looking for and how would I do that? Sorry I am not more sophisticated in this. I just want to correct the problem. I let the machine run nights and weekends and it just bugs me when I come in and BOINC is idle and has been for an unknown period when it could have been doing work. It does not do this all the time but quite regularly.

If you are asking where to find the mentioned error messages, click the "Your results" button in the "Projects" or "Tasks" tab of BOINC manager (advanced view). On the resulting page, click the "Task ID" link (first column).

As for the filesystem check, you'll have to select the properties of a logical drive (C:, D:, ...) in windows explorer and select the "Extras" tab. There you'll find a button to check the filesystem.

There are several possibilities to keep your machine from falling idle.

If you have a permanent Internet connection, allow BOINC to ask for work anytime when idle. If you don't want to do that, you could tell BOINC to download enough work to last for a longer time. You do that by increasing the number of days in the following preferences:

Computer is connected to the Internet about every XX days
(Leave blank or 0 if always connected.
BOINC will try to maintain at least this much work.)
Maintain enough work for an additional YY days
Enforced by version 5.10+

You can find them by clicking "Your account" in BOINC manager and then selecting Computing preferences.

And of course you could add another project. There's no need to detach from Einstein@Home to allow other projects to use your computer. They'll take turns in using the CPU about every hour (if the resource share is the same for each project).
