I have just signed up (again) and I can get NO work, it just keeps saying communication defferred. This is the 3rd time I have tried to get this working in the last several months!! It just won't DO anything!

How many other projects do you have attached to BOINC? And, do you have a lot of other work in progress right now? If so, BOINC may just be deferring until your backlog is reduced. That is, BOINC tries to forecast its work schedule and requests for new work so that it can complete all of its downloaded work before deadline. If this sounds plausible in your case, just leave things alone and BOINC will download an Einstein WU when it is ready.

There have been a number of

There have been a number of recent problem reports similar to yours (both here and on other project message boards). Please help us track down the cause.

Please read this thread: Message boards : Problems and Bug Reports : Disk Space. Message 21578 at (or near) the top of the thread has a list of questions. Please try your best to answer them. This thread has some additional similar reports and also contains some speculation as to possible causes: Message boards : Problems and Bug Reports : no disk space.

Chuck, Welcome to the

Chuck,

Welcome to the Einstein at Home project.

I'm sorry you are having the problems you are but your misfortune may just be able to help us track down some unusual behaviour. If you have a bit of time to help us, could you please first read through the thread that Screbilde linked to to get the instructions on how to change your preferences on the website. Once you understand that, and before you make any changes, can you please go to the thread that Stick pointed out first and answer the questions there so we can see if there is any particular clue to be gained from your experience. Once you have done that you can make the suggested changes to your preferences and tell us if it worked for you.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

Cheers,
Gary.

i changed it back to 10% and 10GB and now it works.

I'm not surprised you had problems :). Using 1GB is OK if you are supporting only a couple of projects but not CPDN. So I don't believe that was the problem.

The problem was to allow BOINC to use only 1% of your disk space. Remember that BOINC only sees the partition in which it is installed. You might have a 200GB hard disk with a 20GB C:\\ partition. 1% of that partition is only 0.2GB which would be cutting things quite fine.

When you choose preferences please do so on the basis that BOINC is not going to run away and eat your disk. You can trust BOINC to use only what it really needs and leave the rest alone.

I believe that you will still get into trouble at 10%. It really depends on what other use you happen to make of the partition where BOINC is installed. I posted a set of questions here in order to try to work out what is really going on with this particular preference. If you would be prepared to answer all the questions it would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Cheers,
Gary.
