Even though there's no legal rank on a pirate ship, everyone recognizes you're the one in charge. You're musical, and you've got a certain style if not flair. You'll do just fine. Arr!

Yeah, hand over yer loot, or I be singin' to ye, real loud, arr! :)

Are we related? Perhaps in a past life?
Per Darwin or per God, I think yes, we're related... per Ariane, I think yes also, but we don't exist; although if that were the case, you'd think I'd be able to sleep in, in the morning... :)
Chipper's Christmas Card inspired me to go and try my hand at making an animated gif.
Here is my first ever attempt.
I'm very proud. :-)
That's a lot better than my first one:
It's supposed to be a model of the smallest piece of thread in the fabric of spacetime, in the strong gravitational field near a binary black hole-black hole system. The best analogy I can think of, is comparing it to a 'picture element', or pixel. In this case it's 3-dimensional pixel that displays fundamental particles and their components, somehow... but what good would it be, even if I could incorporate all of the Lambda-CDM model into it? On the cover of last November's Scientific American is a disturbing headline, "Illusion of Gravity"
I was kind of hoping that my previous post to Kathyrn would spark a discussion in the cafe about all of this. It seems to me that the proper model has to also somehow incorporate a proof regarding Ariane's assertion of non-existence, and of other profound thinkers who maintain that all the maths in the world are just a language. So whoever down-rated my previous post, I'm sorry, but I think I was misunderstood; I guess I'm better at sensing humor than doing it. :) [edit: ah, I see it's not at -1 anymore. Thanks - I'd hate to have to start typing with my forehead!]
Oh yeah, and to quote a friend of mine, in a toast, "Here's to bigger butterflies!"

Ahhh, that was what you were talking about. I wasn't sure and didn't like to ask. :-(
Well, you've come a long way with animated gifs.
So you posted "a model of the smallest piece of thread in the fabric of spacetime" and I posted "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". I feel like I've let the side down. I'll try not to do it again. ;-)
I'm afraid I don't read the Scientific American, so I didn't see the article. I occasionally read the New Scientist, but I don't remember anything on that topic. If there was I probably missed it. Sounds interesting though. I'll have to go back and check what Ariane's theory was.
I suspect you were minused at the mere mention of her name. There are some very petty people out there. I couldn't remember if it was me that plussed you back up so I plussed you to see. You now have +1 for that post, so it must have been somebody else. I wouldn't worry about it, your jokes aren't that bad :-)
[Edit: This thread is getting over long, nearly 400 posts! Now the Captain is back from Disney Land I'll ask him if he could come over at some point and close it and do us another one. :-)]
