For a long while now ClimatePrediction has been zipping along and Einstein@Home is going nowhere at all. Keeps reporting this kind of thing;
27/07/2005 16:59:03|Einstein@Home|Message from server: No work sent
27/07/2005 16:59:03|Einstein@Home|Message from server: (reached daily quota of 2 results)
27/07/2005 16:59:03|Einstein@Home|No work from project
27/07/2005 16:59:04|Einstein@Home|Deferring communication with project for 8 hours, 22 minutes, and 48 seconds
If I look in the user results summary it says either "Client Error" or "No Reply". This has been going on for a long time now and yet the Climate project has had no problems at all. Any ideas ?

"Client Errors"

*Unhide your computers it makes it a lot easier to help
I would suggest to try the App that is currently in our Public Beta Test. Seems that some people having problems with the 4.45 client and our "official" App, which was built with a rather old version of the BOINC library.
The failing address is deep down in the system libs, might be somewhat got broken down there on your installation. A hardware problem I would consider to be rather unlikely (though not impossible), as the error happens always in the same region of the process' memory space.

* I've unhidden my computer :)
I found the beta download page but I've noticed climateprediction has spent over 35 CPU hours on some work that is less than 6% complete. Will that be lost if I install the new beta client ?

As long as there isn't a Major version change (ie 4.xx to 5.xx) you won't lose your progress.
Major version changes, however, may cause some problems, FYI. so CYA when we make that move.

RE: I found the beta

We're not offering a boinc client there, just a new Einstein@Home Application (that then gets ran by the BOINC Core Client). So other Projects shouldn't be affected.
However when you switch to the Beta App you will lose all Einstein@Home work in progress already assigned to the 4.xx App you are currently running.
In anny case it's not a bad idea to make a Backup copy of the whole "BOINC" directory (with subdirectories) before manually touching the files in there.

Thanks Bernd. So if I run the windows .exe my climatepredication data should remain untouched ?
Also, how come you keep your computer(s) hidden ? Mine is a work PC and to be honest I think all companies should be encouraged to have BOINC installed as part of their standard build. Its rediculous the amount of computing power that is wasted - especially with modern PC's that have multi GHz processors and are often left on overnight anyway. But I am concerned about trojan type hacks in this kind of software and the fact one of its developers hides his details adds to that concern.

Simon your acct shows all WUs
)
Simon your acct shows all WUs either have client error or are pass deadline, so if you change you will not lose and E@H WUs cause you have none. Do you use the screen saver? If you do try running with out it or using the graphics.....

in your Einstein preferences, what is your setting for "Connect about ever X days"?

Yes it was the Climatepridiction data that I was concernd at loosing. I've tried disabling the screensave in the past and it didn't help.
Jim
Its 0.1 days - is that a problem ? I'm pretty sure that was the default.

FYI - I upgraded to the beta

FYI - I upgraded to the beta app but that didn't help (by itself). However I detached from the project and reattached and all seems to be okay now - so I can't say whether it was the reattaching or the software upgrade that fixed it.
Connect every 0.1 days will
)
Connect every 0.1 days will not cause a problem. I am wondering if your client errors were caused by a fouled up project file during download. In this case, the reset of the project would dump all the old files and download new ones, which would fix the problem.
just remember, resetting a project should be a last alternative step.
I'm glad it worked for you.
