    I'm getting a "Client detached" error on all my Einstein work since moving my installation of BOINC back to XP Pro from Vista on my dual-boot system. I'm running BOINC v5.10.13. I've found several messages from other people who have a similar problem but I haven't found any straightforward instructions on how to fix the problem. Can someone help? SETI is reporting OK.

      I don't know what you mean by a "client detached" error??

      Can you please stop BOINC and then restart it. Please cut and paste the messages from your messages tab into a new post in this thread so we can see what you are talking about, hopefully with a bit of useful context.

      OK I've just had a look at the results list of one of your computers and can see the outcome of a couple of results listed as "client detached". That's not an error message but rather a statement of fact. It would appear that you have detached your computer from the project. Have you tried to reattach it?

        I did not detach from the project. The client program has never shown any signs of the project being detached. Accoring to several threads on the BOINC message boards, some people on SETI had similar problems that they were describing it as a detachment on the server end, ot the client end. For example,

            Now I understand why you have two similar machines listed but showing unusual activity in the form of results lists that don't really make sense. I didn't understand that you were swapping OS's :).

            Dave has pretty much covered it, I think. I did go and look at the Seti thread you linked to. The postings were back in mid April and ended abruptly with no resolution of the issue as far as I could see. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that those reporting the problem were also doing things like switching OS's that was causing duplicate host ID's to be created.

            There is a perfectly safe way to transfer BOINC to a different machine or even to the same machine with a different OS. I've done this dozens of times so I know it works. Here are the precise steps:-

            • *Stop BOINC and uninstall it on the "old" machine.
              *Store the residual BOINC folder somewhere safe (eg pen drive or server share).
              *Prepare the "new" machine and boot it up.
              *Restore the BOINC folder to wherever you like on the "new" machine.
              *Install BOINC on the "new" machine making sure to specify the location for BOINC you used in the previous step.

            That's it! At the end of the install BOINC will find all jobs that were in progress and simply continue them from where they left off. The BOINC client will advise the server of changes for things like hostname, ip address, etc. You will retain the same host ID so your previous crunching record will remain intact. If your new machine has different specs (and therefore a different crunching speed) things like benchmarks and duration correction factor will be corrected over a period of time without your intervention. If the specs are markedly different you may want to manually adjust some parameters to speed up the relatively slow correction process that BOINC uses.

            EDIT: Completely by chance, I've noticed another user with an identity crisis leading to the "detached" problem :). He seems to have swapped OS's unsafely a few times as his machine now has 4 IDs. Sure enough, if you look at his most recently responding ID, he has results listed as "detached".
