Like me, many people here are probably concerned about the amount of power they use and its contribution toward climate change. I just recently found a new power company, Arcadia Power, which has allowed me to switch over to 100% renewable energy (indirectly). You would still be receiving the same electricity from your local power company, but Arcadia matches your usage with investment in wind farms and solar, the idea being that you would essentially be "carbon-neutral" in your electricity usage.

If you're interested in checking it out, here's a link that will save you some money on your first bill from Arcadia.

Beware. There were similiar schemes DownUnda up until recently. The difficulty was what they said vs. what they did ie. it was largely a scam. They preyed upon people's sensitivity/enthusiasm to the topic. In the fine print were buried clauses like 'if available' etc and it turned out they knew full well that it wouldn't be. Either the infrastructure was not present, not going to be built, not even envisaged to be built, or what production that was occurring was oversubscribed. For a while there were jokes going around like "how many times can you sell the same electron ?" I thought it was only banks that did fractional lending. It seems that we can have green robber barons too. In any event this type of behaviour is driving various personal solutions, but that's only if you can afford to install your own stuff.

As for the relevance to E@H : it certainly is. One of the enabling parts of this project is that volunteers are gifting the cost of electricity as well as that of the computing devices and connectivity. Which is greatly appreciated ! :-)

We don't talk directly about climate issues here, but not because it is not important. It has been amply demonstrated several times here that an open discussion has a ready tendency to become uncivil and/or unproductive. There are plenty of other places to go for a punch up ...... :-))

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

The most definitive way to

The most definitive way to actually get something like that would probably be some type of PV setup on your roof along with some type of energy storage, if your sunshine hours made that cost-effective enough, which might be enough to cover a single typical high-performance crunching setups all by itself but probably not much else while doing that.

Thanks for the words of warning. I had some concerns initially, too, but spent some time researching them and couldn't find anything suspicious. I've been with them for a little while now and am really happy. Customer service has been very responsive as well.

As for setting up my own solar, I would love to do that but unfortunately I'm a poor university student right now and so can't afford to purchase any panels. This is a nice compromise until I can afford something like that.
