Following the upgrade of my original E@H computer from an old version to v5.8.11, it appeared as a new system.
The original system is 127343 (hostname chuckjr) and is listed as
AuthenticAMD
AMD Athlon(tm) processor
Following the BOINC client upgrade, it is now 861433 (hostname chuckjr) and is listed as
AuthenticAMD
AMD Athlon(tm) processor [x86 Family 6 Model 4 Stepping 4] [fpu tsc 3dnow mmx]
I did not change the hardware or OS - just the BOINC client, but it seems to report the hardware differently and therefore does not allow me to merge the two systems!
Compared to all the trouble and frustrations with the project the last couple of months, this may seem trivial, but it is very important to me. Is there any hope - it is my son's computer, we have run this guy for years and he is our highest credit machine. I hate to have to start him all over again (in the stats) ...

Can't merge computers following BOINC upgrade - very frustrating
)
I am afraid you are probably stuck. Eventually you will be able to delete the old version of the host. You will not lose your total stats but the host stats are likely gone.

Same problem with my host
Old id: 505614, reported as "AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+"
new id: 931321 reported as "AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ [x86 Family 15 Model 35 Stepping 2] [fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 3dnow mmx]"
Everything is the same, hostname, CPU, RAM and OS (Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00))
Why can't I merge these two IDs?!??
I want to keep the host stats. They belong to this host!

Because their descriptions aren't the same. Blame BOINC. No, really. :-)

The solution is not reliable and may make things worse (you could end up with 4 unmergable copies of the same host). Uninstall the current version. Reinstall the old version. Merge the hosts. Reinstall the current version.
Installing a different version usually does not make new hosts even when descriptions change. The client will need to contact the server after each install, hopefully it will update the record instead of creating a new one.

Menno! Warum immer so einfach? ;-)
Danke Ananas!
Yep, always the simple way. ;-)
Thanks Ananas!
Edit: Hat leider nicht geklappt. Boinc hat eine weitere host id vergeben, die ich allerdings mit der vorangegangenen (neuen) mergen konnte...
