Can't get app_info to work

I want to get 3 BRP4 WUs crunching on my GTX470, but I simply cannot get it to work. Every time I add app_info to my Einstein directory, it deletes all the previous work and prevents the computer getting any new work. Curiously, it also removes most of the actual CUDA applications (.exe's) from the einstein directory, including the BRP programs.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Can't get app_info to work

That is the natural and, I'm afraid, to be expected behaviour if you don't get the contents and format of an app_info file exactly right. Without knowing exactly what you're trying to achieve, where you're starting from, and what tools you're using, it's hard to give specific advice.

Hi Richard. I'm currently

Hi Richard.

I'm currently running BOINC 6.12.34 on windows 7 x64 on a core i5 750. I would Like to run 3 instances of Einstein GPU Wus on my GTX 470, and 3 instances of Einstein CPU WUs on the 750.

Here is my current app_info, which I basically ripped from one of the posts on these forums:

What was Boinc's error

What was Boinc's error message when it abandoned that work?

Looking at your app_info, it could be the the low setting, it could be the old dbhs.dev files referenced,
you can try this Cuda only app_info then, then use it to update your full app_info:

einsteinbinary_BRP4
Binary Radio Pulsar Search (Arecibo)

einsteinbinary_BRP4_1.00_windows_intelx86__BRP3cuda32.exe

einsteinbinary_BRP3_1.00_graphics_windows_intelx86.exe

That's the thing, there were no error messages, it just started downloading new work as if the previous units never existed.

I'm trying your gpu only app_info but now it's just sitting idle like before. This is what the message log looks like:

12/8/2011 5:15:30 PM | Einstein@Home | update requested by user
12/8/2011 5:15:34 PM | Einstein@Home | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
12/8/2011 5:15:34 PM | Einstein@Home | Not reporting or requesting tasks
12/8/2011 5:15:36 PM | Einstein@Home | Scheduler request completed

edit: restarting BOINC leaves this:

12/8/2011 5:37:30 PM | Einstein@Home | File referenced in app_info.xml does not exist: einsteinbinary_BRP4_1.00_windows_intelx86__BRP3cuda32.exe

12/8/2011 5:37:30 PM | Einstein@Home | File referenced in app_info.xml does not exist: dbhs.dev.win.3d35195e
12/8/2011 5:37:30 PM | Einstein@Home | [error] State file error: missing application file einsteinbinary_BRP4_1.00_windows_intelx86__BRP3cuda32.exe

This happens every time I add an app_info, it deletes all the applications for some reason.

Are you sure that you have downloaded and placed in your E@H project dir, a copy of every single file that is mentioned in your app_info.xml? Does BOINC acknowledge that it finds your app_info.xml when it starts up? BOINC will NOT delete files that are properly specified in app_info.xml. By looking back through your tasks list, you were doing FGRP tasks and GW tasks under AP back on Dec 5. Since that time you have not done any tasks under AP. All subsequent tasks have been done normally. A good clue as to what is needed in your app_info.xml comes from what BOINC puts in your state file during normal operations. You need to browse and understand the contents of the state file in order to make sure about what is needed in app_info.xml.

When you first tried to set this up, did you set NNT and allow all tasks to finish and be reported? At that point it is a good idea to reset the project to clean out entries in your state file that pertain to 'normal' operation. If you don't take care with that you can get problems. Working under AP is not really 'normal' operation and you should really understand what you are doing. Did you then stop BOINC and place the app_info.xml and copies of all the necessary files in the E@H project dir? Do you have a plan in place for when you get this going as to what you will do if new versions for any file in use happen to be released by the project? You will have to be paying attention and react to that situation fairly promptly. It also can be quite painful if you decide to 'bail out' without thinking that through properly. Very easy to trash your entire cache of work at that point.

Is all the extra work and associated risks really worth it? Potentially you'll get more out of your GPU but what have you lost already and what might you lose in future if something goes wrong? It's not that easy to actually get a positive result.

Cheers,
Gary.
