Anyway,

The second time Christmas day fell on a Monday (after our mystery person was born) our mystery person turned 17 :) And then... some considerable time later (and after a full quotient of yearly Mondays) ... they got to see 17 additional ones.

Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! I've got it! Philip Mazzei, Dec. 25, 1730. 2 Monday Christmases hence was in 1747...... Oh wait. Died in 1816. Only saw 8 more Christmas Mondays. :(

Halley's Comet passed in 1747 for the first time since Halley identified it, and 2 Christmas Mondays hence was 1775, 17 years, but it's not a person and so not born or dead.

Quote:
Er, make that 1758 and 1775.

Quote:
tsk tsk tsk... David double posted.

Indeed he did TL - but he WAS out of his mind at the time - or at least - very carried away having not had one to start with.

That will do for the original erroneous post. The double was just because it was too late to edit.

Quote:

Let me see if I can sort out the mess :) Firstly - it's not Philip Mazzei no. Secondly... I wasn't aware... *ruminate further*... that I had strewn the thread with such a large cowpat... *extend neck to maximum in order to peruse area David did his wild cantering about in* but it appears I did :)

Quote:
Now wait a minute. 17 more Christmas Mondays after their 17th birthday would indeed be "some considerable time later".

Indeed it would.

Quote:
If said person was born in, for example, 1780, then the 17th birthday would be 1797. 17 more Christmas Mondays from there comes out to 1927, so said person would have lived for at least 147 years. Are you sure this is correct?

I'm absolutely certain... *smile kindly at David whilst winding in neck* that you are right, you know... to suspect that you're wrong. But I WILL concede to there being an element of ambiguity here...

Quote:
...(and after a full quotient of yearly Mondays) ... they got to see 17 additional ones.

Have a think about it :) Or think about subtracting your mileage from what you gave your employer and obsess on that instead :)

Okay, if not 17 Monday Christmases, then 17 what? Mondays? Died 17 weeks after their birthday? Seems a rather arbitrary statistic, even when there's 17 obsession going on... Upon further reflection, after previewing but before posting, if it is 17 Mondays after their birthday, then I believe that would make the date of death somewhere in the range of April 24-30.

Depends whether he's learning to be an EMD or a GE. If he's a GE, he'll start off with a kind of ruhruhruhruhruhruhrufff, whereas an EMD just goes right into a dissonant howl.

I reckon Disobedience would be a far more common child name in these modern times, given the little **darlings** ( ahem ) that I see everyday.

That YOU see every day*??? Just don't get me started. The hellish part of the school year is building up already.
* Note space between every and day, as appropriate for this usage.

Well yes... at least when they're still at the sticky stage there's a chance they'll get captured by a wall or some strategically spilled orange juice on the floor - but as phases go, that one is way too short *sigh* but the Obedience thing got me most confused... and it may just be the tip of the iceberg. I think I may have identified a flaw with the internet people... it appears to contain information from more than one reality... combining them I ended up with the name originating in AmericaBritain and being Hebrew.

But then again the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Funny you should mention Newton... cos David mentioned Halley...

Quote:
But 17 has that sort of effect on me too...

Was significant to Benjamin Franklin too I believe :)

Good grief... *dark stare* ... forgotten today's clue ...

erm... till I remember it... hope everyone has a nice March :)

Well, if I've misinterpreted something, then the heck with it. My next guess is Peter Reesor. Dec. 25, 1775, although two Monday Christmases hence was only 11 years.

It may also be noted, for no reason whatsoever, that on Monday, Dec. 25, 1741, Anders Celsius developed his scale for thermometers.

Cool sounds .... we now have choof & chug ( well maybe ), stuttering ruhrufff's and howls. Then there's the horns of course. I like BAAAWAAAAWAAAA the best ..... loud and proud, never in doubt ! Sight unseen there are no questions like : "was that a submarine, or perhaps a horse and dray ? Hmmmm not sure so let's wait and see.". No, that just does not happen with B[A^3][[W[A^4]]^2] nor [[ruh]^6]ru[f^3] either ..... :-0

OK, to the main problem of the thread, we have someone who :

- was born on a Xmas Monday

- is now dead

- survived at least 34 years

- has an element of ambiguity

.... mutter, mutter .... 17 ..... a very suspicious prime, no good will come of this, it will all end in tears you know, mark my words, the auguries and the entrails don't lie ... hiccup .... every day ? .... what about the other ones .... the in between days .... whoopsie ... crash ... why are you reading this far ? Can't you tell it's drivel ? Drivel drovel dravel .... crappy auguries ? What about the sugaries ? Yep sugar coated trails n' stuff and waffles. Heck a ton of waffles will do it. With sugar on them ... splat .... dropped that bendy bone .... gone right through the floor it has ... magnificent density that. Den-City ! Are you still reading ? Go on get outta here before the moderator gets moderated .... BTW Anders Celsius started the scale at 100 for water's freezing point then counting down to zero at boiling. Later on he stood up properly but by then someone had beat him to it and flipped the thumb-o-meter over .... 'tis true, honust ....

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) Now there is always the fuss regarding Julian & Gregorian dates which were in simultaneous use in some countries for certain periods. Complex.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

The drivel is often the best stuff around here.

Sounds delicious. Makes me want waffles (and not just the things in the box in the back of my freezer that I pop into the toaster, real ones made from scratch. Not enough to dig out the waffle iron and clean it, though.

I only saw it as an "event on this day" as I was looking for Monday December 25 birthdays. I didn't research it any further.

I considered that and decided it wasn't important. I do continue to bear it in mind, in case it becomes important.

So. Annie hasn't responded yet to my guess of Peter Reesor, but I will go ahead with another one anyway, although she will probably be offended by what I say, even after I preface with the supposition that I'm probably wrong again.

I see a (small) possibility that she is confusing two John Fitzgeralds. One was the 15th Knight of Kerry and a member of the Irish House of Commons and may have died at age 34 (or 35; Wikipedia doesn't know his birthday, only his death day). The other was born on Dec. 25, 1775 (which year we already know doesn't hold with Annie's 17th birthday clue) and elected MP for Seaford, later serving as High Sheriff of County Waterford. He lived much longer than 34 years, though.

However, as much as she might act like it, I don't think Annie really is scatterbrained enough to have made that error. (That ought to keep her from clobbering me with a frying pan, or Julie's or Uli's rolling pin.)

[edit]
It just occurred to me that I was born in December in a year in which Christmas was on a Monday, and also that the year I turned 17 was the second such year since. However, as I am living considerably farther past Joan than Annie indicated for the proper date range, and more to the point, am still living (and hope to for some years to come), I highly doubt that she has me in mind.

[edit2]
The above reminds me, I forgot to say anything one week ago about it being the anniversary of the day I was created. Not born, created (depending on your stance on the debate over when life begins, which we won't get into here). I bet none of you know that tid bit about yourselves.

[edit3]
I already have tomorrow's wrong guess planned.

The voices!! Make them stop!!

The voices!! Make them stop!! I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to do it, really I...

Oh, um, hi everyone!

This was an attempt at levity. Had this been REAL levity you would have been directed to your local politician for a statement on the state of the State, er, Union.

Attempt number 2.

What's brown and black and looks good on a lawyer? A Doberman.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Anniet reality.
