My current tally stands at 4 successful validations and 26 where my cuda WU was inconclusive vs someone elses SSE. Am I having a string of really bad luck/GPU problems; or is the problem really this bad?

You have really bad luck today. You have to wait for tomorrow, when your luckiness will return to you :)
The problem still exists, but rare people have so bad luck.
BTW, even if your rig is doing well it is a good idea to check the video memory with GMemTest80.

16 mixed WU's validated, 50 with validation problems, 26 cuda-cuda validations.
MemtestG80, reported no errors in 640MB tests (not enough available ram to test @ 768). Until the next app is released, the validator is tweaked, or teh scheduler is adjusted to stop paring SSE and Cuda, or someone comes up with troubleshooting suggestions; I'm taking my 260's over to milkeyway.
