I popped a GeForce 9500GT (1GB RAM) in one of my PCs, installed the driver from Feb 2011, Windows sees the card, and it appears to be working fine, but BOINC (and more specifically Einstein@Home) won't see it. I tried resetting the project, detatching the project, reinstalling BOINC, messing with BIOS settings (the motherboard has built-in video, which I've turned off), with the same results. Windows XP Pro is fully updated. I have the same motherboard in another computer that runs CUDA fine (though the firmware has been updated on this motherboard) and I have the same video card in another PC that runs CUDA fine. I installed a GeForce 8400GS in this same computer, and BOINC won't see that either (and that card ran CUDA in another PC fine), so it looks like the issue is with the PC itself. I'm going to update the BIOS next. I've never seen anything like this before. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Since the projects depend on BOINC recognising the hardware, the resetting and detaching wasn't necessary. :-)

Since you disabled the onboard graphics, I suppose you have a monitor attached to the CUDA board, which should be sufficient for BOINC to recognise it.

I'm not quite sure if fully updated XP still supports Protected Application Execution (service) mode with GPUs. So, check that you didn't select that mode when installing.

PAE is OK on XP.

So what driver version is that? and where did you get it from? i don't think the drivers from Microsoft include Cuda support,
Go to Nvidia and get the one of the latest drivers from there,

Once the drivers are installed you might need to attach a monitor onto any extra GPU's before Boinc will see them,
and you might also need to extend the Desktop onto that GPU so Boinc will continue seeing the 2nd GPU after the monitor is removed.

Hi!

Did you solve the problem? I see thattwo out of your three PCs receive CUDA tasks now:

If it's the third PC that is making problems, it would be useful to see what messages are displayed in BOINC manager's Message tab after BOINC is started. BOINC should tell you something about the GPU hardware and driver it detects (if any).

Thanks for the response. It's version 26724, the same as my other two GeForce 9500GT's are running, and all of them came from Microsoft Updates.

I only have a single display setup (like my other two machines), and whether a montior is connected doesn't change the behavior.

Thanks again,

Nope, not yet, unfortunately, I've downloaded the BIOS update from Asus, but won't be able to install it until next week, likely.

Yes, it's the third PC (not showing the video card -- even though it's in there with the correct driver) causing the issues.

Here's some pertinent output from the BOINC messages from that machine:

That's very doubtful, as the drivers gotten through Windows Update are missing things like OpenGL and CUDA support. So why not go get 270.61 from Nvidia, install that one and see how that fares you?

For me too the Ati or Nvidia drivers, depending on your card, gotten from the manufacturers website are far better! Now Windows does say it updates the video card drivers when it does Windows updates for me, but as Jord said it does not help with crunching. Perhaps yours came from the disk when you installed the card originally?
