I shut down my e@h machine over the holiday, and when I tried to restart the project, it failed.
I then found the newest Boinc, uninstalled the old 4.xx version, and installed the new one-- three times. The first time, in shared mode, I couldn't persuade it to start a client. The second time, I tried the single user mode, and found it wouldn't install under a limited type account. Running boinc always under an admin account is not acceptable. The third time, I again tried shared mode, and this time, restarted the computer right after the installation. Then, it found the e@h project, but after starting the (continuing) job under admin, boinc manager has locked in some way. It no longer opens from the icon on the task bar, and when I open it from the start menu, it locks at the "connecting to localhost" stage.
I'm running Windows XP Pro with all the latest critical updates and Norton NIS 2005, also up to date.

Boinc upgrade problems
)
If you haven't been paying real close attention lately, you may not know that the "newest BOINC" is a bit of a "moving target". Last week, the "newest BOINC" was v5.2.8. Today it is v5.2.13 (at least it was before I started writing this). The point is, there have been a lot of minor fixes to BOINC very recently, so if you are not working with v5.2.13 (and you did not specify), that might be the first thing to try.

Stick,
The heroic efforts of Mr. Rom Walton to evolve the 5.x.x BOINC client (you've credited above) are the sole reason that I haven't been pushing the default installer options over on the BOINC boards. The last post on that thread makes me angry every time I read it, asserting that loading a resource-intensive app at startup is somehow "Normal". I wonder if it's also considered normal to load Photoshop, Premier, etc, and have them working on editing at startup, or should we let the machine get it's legs under itself before pounding it.
You are ever the silver-tongued salesman, amigo - I'm glad that we're working on the same side. :-)

I assumed that downloading yesterday would get the "newest"! In fact,
it is 5.2.13.

William,
Just a shot in the dark here :-)
Is your Norton firewall (and windows firewall, if you have that enabled also) configured to allow Boinc access?

)
Reasonable guess, but I've checked NIS and the firewall lists Boinc as
"allow all". Further, I've had it running briefly under the admin
account, but now it hangs. I've not had it do anything sensible under
the user's account since the upgrade.
Thx,

Bill,
Let's try this - First, shut down the computer completely. wait a minute, and then restart. Then, please copy and paste the contents of the "Messages" tab and post them in this thread, along with your selections in General Preferences on your account page. Perhaps that will give us some insight into the nature of the problem.

Michael

)
Bill,
I think your "Do work while computer is in use? no" pref may be the culprit here. That is, when you try to look at what BOINC is doing, it isn't doing anything, because it can't be doing anything, because that's what the preference says. Try changing it to "yes" and see what happens.
Stick
Edit: I came to this conclusion because your messages indicate that BOINC is running Einstein - it's just not doing it when you are doing something else with your computer.

Bill,
The line I've italicized appears to indicate that your Einstein workunit is presently crunching. Is that the case?
Secondly, where I've emboldened part of your preference listing (and it appears that this is not a problem for you yet, because there are no error messages about disk space), the way that BOINC looks at disk memory requirements has changed with the move from the 4.xx to the 5.x.x client. I've just today run across a thread explaining the change, and I'll try to run it down and link it a little later, maybe even soon enough to add it to this post as an "edit".
Michael
(edit) OK, that was easy. Walt Gribben has researched and posted the changes in disk space calculation here.

Bill,
Michael is right about these settings. There have been a lot of problems reported lately regarding disk space problems. The issue is still somewhat in "limbo" but there were couple of recent posts that indicate a bug was found and fixed. Not a problem for you yet but you might want to keep this thread in mind and adjust your disc prefs accordingly (whenever it is convenient).
