When attempting to restart boinc:
# /etc/init.d/boinc start
startproc(8) reports the boinc daemon has been
started successfully. Unfortunately after approx.
three seconds boinc itself writes a very different
message in the log file:
Another instance of BOINC is running
The Linux kernel has no knowledge of this imaginary
process. What's wrong with boinc? How do I get it
back to work? Time to send in the lawyers? :-)

Boinc on strike!
)
Strange things are happening… I've no clue why, but this did the trick:
- dd'ed a 4GB file and loop'ed it
- used mke2fs/tune2fs to build new fs
- made a file list of original boinc fs
- removed all files that didn't seem important from the list
- mounted the pseudo-partition and pax'ed remaining files to new fs
- modified boinc HOME directory
- run 'rcboinc start' again, and finally boinc gave in
I ran fsck on the original partition: no inconsistencies found. The best explanation I can think of, is that one of the removed files contained an xml tag that boinc (5.10.45) didn't recognize. I've seen boinc failing in a situation like that before, however, the error message that time was more helpful than the one above.
If anyone has experienced a similar problem and/or knows the cause of this spurious error message, please, let me know.
