I have windows XP with SP2. When windows boots up, Boinc Manager will open and freeze. I have to do a ctrl alt-delete to close it.
I read on a another thread about someone having a similar problem. He had to open up Boinc client first, then Boinc Manager for it to run properly.
This works for me, but I have to keep the Boinc client window open. If I close it, Boinc will not run.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled this program many many times with the same problem. I've tried single user and the multi-user open. I downloaded version 5.2.13 yesterday, Jan 31.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks

Carmine

When using the Windows Task Manager, got to the 'Processes' tab and see if there is any usage ( meaning the number in the 'CPU' column is non-zero ) for 'boincmgr.exe', 'boinc.exe' and whatever the work unit(s) are - for instance 'albert_4_37_windows_intel86.exe' on mine. You may have to watch for a while to see activity depending on you're run settings ( what are they, by the way? ).

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal

When everything is running properly,albert_4.37_windows_intel86.exe will use about 95 - 98%, boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe will show 0%. If I were to close the boinc client window, bionc.exe will exit followed by albert_4.37_windows_intel86.exe. Then Bionc Manager won't work.

Does that help?

Thanks

Just a few days ago, I

Just a few days ago, I installed XP Pro sp2 with the 5.2.13 client and it's working properly. However, just a couple hours ago I noticed that I when installed the Compaq Insight Management Agent on the PC, I got the same exact problem as you describe - uninstalling the agent immediately solved the problem.. a temporary solution at best, admittedly. Just wondering if you have a similar configuration?

Unfortunately not. At one time, I had no problems with BOINC. Then I reformated the hard drives on my computer. The only thing I can think of that is different from then and now is the newer AOL version I ended up installing, which is AOL 9.0 Security Edition. Maybe I should unistall that and see what happens. Other than that, I can't think of any other software that would interfere with BOINC.

Thanks

Ding, ding, ding, ding! Bingo, we have a winner! Actually, a LOSER is more like it, AOL. Security Edition? I suppose, and if the thing shut down completely, you'd have the most secure computer in the world. Well, AOL has you just about in that position. That PoS AOL has installed about 15 useless programs along with it, check your Task Manager and see all the new crap that's running, right from the time you boot. Dial-up Accelerator is virtually no improvement, except that it degrades quality of any image, making them a bit smaller, and a bit quicker, that's all. Also installs AV, which you probably already had, so now the two AVs are conflicting each other. Anti-spyware - no need for that to be running in the background. Dump it and use free Ad-Aware and Spybot, both better than AOL's junk, and just use the scan-on-demand. My advice - uninstall AOL 9 SE AND the crap installed BY it, and if you feel you need AOL 9, do use the "Expert" install option, and uncheck all the junk items.

Regards,

Michael

I figured all the stuff that came with it was crap. You're right, AOL has multiple programs running in the background. At the time, that was the only version I was able to find on AOL's site. I will uninstall it and see what happens from there.
Thanks a lot.

Do a message board search for "connect local host" and read the search results. this topic has already been covered ad nauseum. :-)

Well, I have uninstalled AOL

Well, I have uninstalled AOL 9.0 Security Edition and all of its components and BOINC now works with no problem. I can't beleive AOL was the cause of the problems. Damn AOL

Thanks everyone for all the help.
