I am using a Mac running 10.5.8. Very frequently, after running for a while, I wake up the Mac and find that the program does not respond. I get the spinning ball and have to force quit BOINC. To get it started again, I must restart the computer.

What do you mean by "I wake up the Mac"? If it is going to sleep then it could be your power settings, Boinc is designed to be run 24/7 and if your Mac is going into suspend or snooze mode that could be your problem.

No it isn't, Mikey. The original BOINC design is to use spare (idle) CPU cycles on any system and do science with them. There's no requirement in BOINC that systems run 24 hours of every day of the week, of every week of the month, of every month of the year without letup. That's what some users made of it.

@Iam32, what are your preference settings for:
- Suspend work while computer is on battery power?
- Suspend work while computer is in use?
- 'In use' means mouse/keyboard activity in last X minutes
- Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last Y minutes

Is the Mac a notebook of sorts? Then you'll need to use the suspend while on battery power. The last setting, 'suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last Y minutes' is especially for computers going to low power mode. Make sure it's set at 1 minutes less than the time you set for your computer to go into hibernation. E.g. your computer is set to go to hibernation after 90 minutes, then you set BOINC to suspend after 89 minutes. This assure that all BOINC activity has suspended before your computer dumps all its active stuff to the hard drive.

I am using a MacPro3 desktop.

I am using a MacPro3 desktop. I have tried various settings for energy saving. Now they are set to never putting the computer to sleep and putting the display to sleep after 30 minutes.

In use is set for 2 minutes.

Suspend has no setting.

I think the problem is

I think the problem is solved. After receiving an email about the upgrade of BOINC, I installed the upgrade and the freezing has disappeared.
