The Boinc on my machine runs continuously, and I want it to only run when my computer is idle.

At the website:
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/prefs.php?subset=global
I have the prefs set under "general preferences" as (and I have no other separate preferences added):
Do work while computer is running on batteries?
(matters only for portable computers) no
Do work while computer is in use? no
Do work only after computer is idle for 3 minutes

Also, I checked my messages on the Boinc manager and got this:
1/4/2007 1:59:41 PM|Einstein@Home|URL: http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/; Computer ID: 759959; location: ; project prefs: default
1/4/2007 1:59:41 PM||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults

Why is Boinc not following the preferences I have set?

Boinc Einstein won't stop

Look under the activity menu and make sure it's set to run based on preferences.

I can confirm that it was already set to that.

Has BOINC recently connected to the server ( ie. updated ) to receive that changed preference? Meaning that although you have told BOINC to run based on preferences, have you set the ( E@H ) preferences at your E@H account page, and have the two talked ( your BOINC installation and the E@H server )?

Cheers, MIke.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Yeah, they've definitely talked. They've talked pretty much daily.
But the problem appears to have been solved by going around it. I reassigned my computer to be a "work" computer, and then added "work computer preferences" with the same setup as the gen preferences, and now it does as I want. A little odd, but whatever, as long as it works!
thanks for the help.
