Hi,
I'm using BOINC 5.2.5 to run Einstein@home on my home computer. It connects to the internet via an external modem. Even though I can connect manually, BOINC cannot. When it needs to connect to the Einstein server it seems to use the modem just fine, it dials, and the modem seems to log on (judging from the sounds), but then BOINC reports failure to resolve the hostname etc. in alarmingly red colors. Personally, I suspect it just gives up too soon (connecting usually takes some more time). Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
It's running on an AMD 1.8 Ghz, WinXP SP2, the modem is an external E-Tech Bullet (an old one) connecting through a serial port.
Stefan.

BOINC cannot connect using modem

Stefan,
If you haven't been paying real close attention to this lately, you may not know that we are now up to BOINC 5.2.7. I think I read somewhere that one of the fixes in 5.2.6 (or 7) had to do with dial-up connections. Therefore, you might want to try upgrading again.
Stick
EDIT: I just did a keyword search on dial-up and, although there was a mention of dial-up in a discussion regarding 5.2.6, it did not indicate that anything had been "fixed".
