BOINC attempts to shut down other programs/computer

I am running Einstein@home/BOINC on a Windows XP platform and occasionally when I exit the screen saver, the program attempts to shut down all the other programs I have running and then pulls up the "turn off computer" dialog box. Each time, I have had to pull up the task manager and manually turn off Einstein@home. I don't think this is damaging, but it's annoying, and I know my computer doesn't have a virus because I have virus protection software and scan regularly. Any ideas on how to make this stop? Thanks.

I can't say with any certainty as I run win2k and not xp, but it sounds like a problem with hibernation/powermanagment.
Try turning off these bugs/features and see it the problem persists.

I've been experiencing a similar problem using win98SE where my monitor goes into standby mode and the system shuts down but the hard disk keeps running. as it's win98 the only way to recover is to cold reboot. this has happened four times since i installed boinc/einstein and never once before in several years. As Mike says there does seem to be a connection with energy management, which is notoriously flaky under Win98SE.

I am running BOINC with various projects on approx 10 hosts. These include Win XP home, PRO, win servere 2003, Win 2k, Win NT and win 98 (host now dead!). I have never seen any of the symptoms you guys are describing
Ivy, from what you are describing, Windows is bringing up the shut down computer dialogue box when you are coming out of the screen saver. I am not sure if this is actually a power management problem as suggested. If this was power management's doing, the PC would just shut down. It wouldn't ask you first!
However, given that you are virus free (are you definitions up to date?) then I am not sure what else could cause this. DO you have a firewall running?
I presume you don't have remote management software installed?
Also, I recommend you go to Symantec web site and run their online security check. This will provide an independant check of your PC for threats.
Anyway, for now, working ion the assumption that the problem may be power management...
Does this happen all the time or only when the screen saver has been active for some time ie long enough so that the machine *should* go into hibernation (if you werent running BOINC)?
If it is only after the machine has been left alone for a while, check your hard disk time out settings to make sure that it has at least an hour inactive before it tries to shut off. BOINC defult is to write to disk at most every one minute but I don't know if that necessarily means it will definatley write every one minute.... In any case, by setting the idle timeout to be pretty high, chanches are BOINC will write to disk within that window. If the hard disk doesn't reach it's idle time threshold then it wont shut down which should prevent windows going into hibernation.
The other thing to do would be to disable power management altogether.... and see what happens. Although I wouldn't really think this is a great idea seeing as you most likely want your monitor, graphics card etc to shut down when the PC is not in use.
@cIclops: Power management is brutal in Win98. Think it and BOINC between them led to the death of my oldest host! I had several hard crasher... refusing to come out of screen saver... resulting in the machine needing to be powered off in a very windows unfriendly manner!.
Win NT is not much better!

It's now looking like a shutdown problem caused by the extra heat in the 1GHz AMD Tbird CPU ... the temperature monitor shows its temperature increasing from 57°C to 62°C when boinc/einstein is running and falling back when it exits. the system is kept virus free and is protected by an external router; power management mode is "always on". i wonder how much hotter it gets if it runs the ClimatePrediction.Net model :)

From my experience (Athlon 1400) Einstein, LHC and Predictor are the 'hottest' projects (~49-50 °C) . Seti and Climate are 'cooler' (~45-46 °C).
