Best Cost-Efficient GPU for Einstein?

Topic 205505

I'm thinking about picking up another GPU or two, but I'm looking for something that will give me the most "bang for the buck" so to speak. I know the king used to be the GTX 750Ti, but now that card is several years old now. I'm wondering what card released in the last two years or so performs very well on the new GPU tasks here at Einstein and also is efficient in terms of performance/watt as well as performance/cost.

Thanks for any advice.

A guy over at SETI has

A guy over at SETI has compiled a nice graph showing the relative compute performance of AMD and Nvidia GPU over the last several generations.  I'm sure the SETI performance pretty closely matches the Einstein GPU performance Have a look.

GPU Performance

I think the consensus is that the GTX 1060 is one of the best "bang for the buck" choices.

AMD RX 480 should be better for the same price: GTX 1060 vs RX 480 comparison - rising market share and popularity confirms this. Overall benchmarks show that RX 480 is the most valuable of all cards. AFAIK miners also mostly buy RX 470/480 currently - the most raw computing power "for the buck".

Here i'm asking about switching my R9 290 to newer gen cards, no one replied yet. The thread was about concurrent tasks are unavailable in windows with current drivers, so recommendation is to switch to linux, which also gives ~10% performance boost.

You're currently running GTX 1080 with 900 sec/task, how many concurrent tasks does it run? The same time as for RX 480, 2x tasks.

I am running Einstein@home

I am running Einstein@home GPU tasks on my Windows 10 PC with A10-6700 CPU and a Palit GTX 1050 Ti card.  I noticed the latest Einstein@home GPU tasks running as opencl-Beta-nvidia and then opencl1K-nvidia. Since I am not a GPU expert I would like someone to explain the difference. On my Linux box with Opteron 1210 CPU I am using a GTX 750 board to run Seti Beta GPU tasks but I have not received any Einstein@home GPU task.

I believe the server isn't delivering any Beta versions at the moment. Yesterday there were Beta v1.20's but them are propably regular 1K's today. https://einsteinathome.org/apps.php I think it's the same. Beta versions have recently been promoted to non-Beta after the Beta app has been seen to behave properly enough.

Your GTX 750 doesn't have enough memory to run the 1.20 '1K' version:

[version] Checking plan class 'FGRPopencl1K-nvidia'
[version] parsed project prefs setting 'gpu_util_fgrp': 1.000000
[version] OpenCL GPU RAM required min: 1048576000.000000, supplied: 1021444096

I'm not sure if this would help, but you could try if changing the "Run test applications" setting in the project preferences made a difference.

the current FGRPB GPU tasks

the current FGRPB GPU tasks aren't (weren't?) playing nicely with AMD 4xx cards.  Single tasks don't max out the GPU (on any platform); normally that just means run 2 at a time, but I've seen a number of reports of 4xx cards running far slower with 2 Fermi tasks than with 1.

OK, thanks Richie. I shall

OK, thanks Richie. I shall run Einstein@home GPU tasks on the GTX 1050 with its 4 GB Ram and SETI@home GPU tasks on the GTX 750.

I have 4 computers running 4

I have 4 computers running 4 different GPU's:

GTX 750ti

GTX 950

GTX 960

GTX 970

Check out the times and RAC if that helps you at all.

They're obsolete, better look at these setups: https://einsteinathome.org/account/107642/computers. As you can see, AMD RX 480 yields > 600k/day currently, compare with nVidia GTX 1070's or your card's performance.

Thanks for the info and advice everyone. I was thinking either a 1060 or RX 480. The two comments above seem to be conflicting regarding the 480's performance. Anyone else have experience with the 480?

Check out the power too.  I think you will find that the GTX 1060 is more efficient (PPD/watt) than the RX 480.
