(I think) the only way Boinc Manager can run is if I grant it permission to access the trusted zone. And Zone Alarm free firewall is constantly alerting to this even when the computer is not connected to the Internet. It occasionally seems to be adversely affecting system resources.
I would like it to run about 24/7 but this constant alerting is driving me nuts. Is there a way to make run without it constantly trying to acces the trusted zone or Internet or whatever? I would prefer it to communicate only when I need it to.
The only project I'm running is E@H.
I'm running Boinc Manager 5.2.13, Windows XP Home Edition, IE6 SP2, Zone Alarm free on a emachines T3624 2.66 GHz 60GB HHD, 36GBfree, 4GB page file nearly empty, entire HHD incl. page file is defragged daily.
Any help to get this Boinc manager acting politely would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. Have a great day.

You have to open port 1043 at the very least; it's used for internal communications between BOINC components. Nothing should be going "out" except when it connects to the servers, port 80. There are other ports used for HTTPS and as a "fallback" internally, you can check the Wiki for details.

Hi caktus,
Welcome to EAH. We hope you have an enjoyable stay here.
BOINC on your computer is in two parts. BOINC Manager, the GUI that you see and interact with is simply that - a GUI. The real work of the BOINC client is done by the daemon (boinc.exe) that runs in the background. The GUI interrogates the daemon quite frequently so that the information on your various BOINC Manager tabs is always kept up to date. That communication is done by a connection to localhost which you should be able to see in the status information at the bottom right corner of the GUI window. You should see "Connected to localhost" there if everything is running normally. Localhost is your own computer in the trusted zone.
Your firewall can see this communication and you have it configured to report it to you. Of course you don't need to be concerned at all about this communication. It is quite necessary and totally harmless. All you need to do is tell zonealarm that both boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe have normal access permission for both the trusted zone and the internet zone. If you don't give this permission BOINC will not be able to work on your computer. In the "Access" column in zonealarm's "Program Control" window, make sure you have two green ticks for each program. Then you will have no further annoying popups.
Edit: Sorry Bill, our posts crossed :).
Cheers,
Gary.
