Alot of companies have learnt from the old Beta vs VHS ruckus. Beta is/was a technically superior idea, and you still see it's output every night on the news. But that is the only remaining market of significance for it. Anyone old enough to recall the video stores with one side VHS and the other side Beta? Except that the Beta zone shrank to one wall only, then a corner, a shelf, the cupboard out back and finally the dumpster.
There is a very real synergy between a product's development and it's market share/competition. Economists wax lyrical about unstable equilibria, chaotic markets, attractors etc ....
The first runner out of the blocks can write the agenda and even a slim lead will magnify. However our Dear Bill with a massive investment still got bad burns over the timing of Iridium.
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

I never had a Betamax but, at one time I had a Laser Disc Player.
Remember those ? _It was like a 12 in diameter CD. It had great quality for back then.
You are exactly right about the best technology not always winning.
I still haven’t bought a Blu-Ray drive. ( I might, someday)

Yup. The lab I worked in during grad school used those to display our stimuli to the babies. We put them on video tape and then sent them out to a company to be made into a Laser Disc. I was always afraid I was going to drop them, scratch them, or otherwise damage them, thus earning the wrath of my adviser.

Hi Kathryn !
I downloaded the beta Boinc 6.10.0 client today and, am running it as I type. It works fine except,
it does not properly detect my ATI 4850 card ( I might have a uncommon brand XFX )
Anyway, I am very glad they are starting to work on ATI support.
BTW: The beta Boinc 6.10.0 client that they have released was created by Crunch3R.

I think you are mixing it up with Crunch3R's 6.1.0 version (which was based upon 5.x code).
There are two successive entries in the BOINC source code logs:
[trac]changeset:18846[/trac] ATI GPU detection code (from Crunch3r)
[trac]changeset:18847[/trac] clean up ATI code and make it work (or at least compile)
So Crunch3r certainly had a hand in the doing of it, but.....
I suspect that problem at BOINC's end was lack of time, rather than lack of ability - BOINC is always grateful if somebody else can lend them a hand (especially if it compiles!)

Howdy Richard,
You are probably correct about that. I have thought many times
that they (Boinc developers) were intentionally dragging their heels
and squelching ATI support due to some satanic style pact with
Nvidia corp.

Does Einstein@home use double precision crunching?
If not the double precision crunching in hadware capability
of the ATI card will have no advantage.

Hi Mark,
Not so_Crunch3R has coded the recent ATI support in 6.10.0 !
See This Thread over at milky way._ DA and the other Boinc developers probably couldn't do
it themselves.
