How do I gracefully shut down BOINC when I want to turn off or
restart the computer? I want something less damaging than typing
ctrl-C in the window in which it is running.
System: Mac OS X Version 10.3.8.
Thanks.

Control-C is fine. The client will catch that and send appropriate shutdown signals to the application. Just make sure you have your 'write to disk' preferences set for say 60 seconds or 120 seconds so that the last checkpoint was recent and you don't lose too much work.
